Unfortunately, this wore on me quite a bit. There's good stuff here -- particularly the sequence in Transylvania, which was tense and atmospheric. It's a nightmare-fueled, bad-trip take on Dracula that transforms the source material into a lucid horror rollercoaster. However, beyond that point, the experience was mixed for me.

I often think about the value of remakes and adaptations. It really depends on the project. Take John Carpenter's The Thing versus Jon Favreau's The Lion King, for example. One…

For such a big name in filmmaking, it's a surprise that Spike Lee has quite a few films that fly right under the radar. Girl 6 is one of these, a satirical comedy which uses phone sex as a stage for exposing how black women are exploited by the entertainment industry.

"What the heck is happening?" asks protagonist Shinji Ikari late into this movie's runtime. Good fucking question. This third entry in the proposed "rebuild" of Neon Genesis Evangelion boldly diverges from the original plotline pretty much entirely, but brings in heaps of frustrating elements along with it.

I wrote out a review for this film yesterday afternoon, but decided to sit on it for a little while. Perhaps for better or worse I came to the realisation this morning that…

I do like this film's ambitions to be a smart blockbuster, but it ends up feeling like a watered down version of a greater ideal (in this case: the graphic novel it is based on).

I don't have too much good to specifically say about this film, but overall it does function as a decent blockbuster. It has its exciting moments and the core plot is interesting and mostly engaging. There's a few decent mindless action scenes as well. Hugo…
