My first Studio Ghibli film and it sure is a good one to start with. Effortlessly sweet, heartwarming and charming throughout its short run time. I was surprised to see that it deals with some more adult subjects inbetween it’s whimsical nature.
The animations and visuals all look spectacular, really adding to the entire childlike wonder of the movie. It captures the essence of childhood unlike a lot of movies I have seen. It’s so easy to be drawn in. Everything looks so detailed, the forests and landscapes are great. Following the two lead children through this wonderful world that these creatures inhabit is fantastic to look at, it is at its heart a childhood story. They feel like real children, discovering these secrets that no one else sees.
It’s a slower pace than I expected, but it does a lot with its 90 minute story, working the wonders of these creatures into the story slowly, while also ensuring they are important to the plot and development.
I will certainly be watching more of the studio Ghibli movies, especially now they are appearing on Netflix, and this film was just what I needed in my flu bound state!
