Anne of Green Gables, if eleven-year-old Prince Edward Island orphan Anne was Lake Muskoka, Ontario tripping-on-shrooms cranberry farmer Elliot, who’s both eighteen and thirty-nine years old, gay and possibly bi, and eager to matriculate at University of Toronto. Pairs with many loss stories, like Tuesday and Our Friend and Supernova and Love Is Strange and Terms of Endearment and On Golden Pond. It’s on my Helmswomen list and gets an honorary shout-out on my Sudden Death list (because I can’t think of another movie where a future death is emotionally telegraphed in quite this way).
