This really shows Shemp at his peak. He flourishes when reacting with his unique, tormented howls. He feels just like a tottering old man, but there’s a method and precision to his senile demeanor. I wonder if this commitment to character is something that can only be cultivated through decades in vaudeville. Will we ever see another clown with such charming dedication to performance? After the Stooges and silent comedians are forgotten, will such total commitment to entertainment be a part of a bygone era?
