The opening hour of this film is some of my favorite beat-by-beat methodical and purely entertaining filmmaking in recent years. What starts as a tense, steely neo-Western thriller, eventually tacks on a few more moves - both legal thriller and revenge actioner get some play, as well. It's all infused with heartfelt social and political righteousness and enough plot surprises and character shading to avoid artifice. Aaron Pierre is out of sight and full of surprising hero beats and welcomed emotionality. Don Johnson and AnnaSophia Robb are perfect pulpy scene companions.
While the movie finds ways to shade it a little, the ACAB heart is still there and resonant. Sadly, it's both a timely and timeless movie.
