We all really need to appreciate Ridley Scott for making epics of this scope and scale at age 86, this is fucking insane. There were so many points where I genuinely felt transported into Rome, into the city, the Colosseum, it was incredible. This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and while some were disappointed, I certainly wasn’t. This was absolutely astounding. First off, as everyone has already said, Denzel Washington is the best there is. He has the most magnetic screen presence of any actor ever, and I don’t think that it’s close at all. Paul Mescal delivers a truly fantastic performance here as well, that (if the Oscars are cool) should land him a nomination. Mathieson coming back for the cinematography and re-teaming up with Scott makes this an utterly gorgeous film. And I need to mention that while I still think the first is better overall, the action in this is vastly better. Every battle, every Colosseum fight, they were all breathtakingly well done. Every scene throughout the film just had me levels of “locked in” that I haven’t felt since Furiosa. I adored this so much. Films like this are what blockbuster filmmaking is all about
