“How do you know this green place even exists?”
“I was born there.”
“Why'd you leave?”
“I didn't. I was taken as a child. Stolen.”
I remember seeing Mad Max: Fury Road in theatres back in 2015 during my freshman year in high school. It was one of the first times as a film fan that I felt I was living on a different planet than everybody else. This movie made me so nauseous the first time I saw it, and it had such a negative impact on my experience (screw you, D-BOX seats).
It was because of that unfortunate day seeing Fury Road that it clouded my judgement of this entire series. But, after purposefully putting off a rewatch of this film until after I saw Furiosa…I get it now.
Paint me up full of chrome, put some explosive javelins in my hand, and witness me enter the gates of Valhalla.
Mad Max: Fury Road plays out essentially like a 120 minute chase scene, and it’s all the better for it. While the plot can be a little light, the characters are immediately engaging and the story flies at the viewer seamlessly. It’s truly excellent action-movie storytelling.
Witnessing how Furiosa’s story began before revisiting this epic film was the right approach in my opinion. It was also such a treat seeing the similarities and differences in both Charlize Theron & Anya Taylor-Joy‘s performances as this amazing character.
Tom Hardy is literally never gives a bad performance in any project he is apart of. His portrayal of the titular Mad Max belongs in the pantheon of “Great Performance’s from Tom Hardy with a facial smile obstruction.”
Watching this film on it’s own is a truly epic experience, but Furiosa adds so much to the world-building and expansion. Some characters carry over between films, and some do not even if we haven’t seen their fate just yet.
I really hope Warner Bros. lets George Miller tackle more of these films. I mentioned it in my review for Furiosa, but at this point I would much rather watch two of these a year instead of your generic comic book fare.
