The love and care put into this movie is visible from the opening credits, and it doesn’t stop there. The design of Miguel’s town, the afterlife and the different locations within it, and the alibrijes all look amazing, and feel a complete part of a full world. But even with all that, it’s the story that truly elevates this film. It’s such a beautiful tale of family, love, and betrayal. There’s also some great concepts—dead people can die again?! The first time I saw this in cinemas I was leaking tears the entire last 15 minutes, and this time was no different. It has the emotional strength of the opening of Up, with an entire movie’s worth of connective material bringing it together for an amazing crescendo.
