when antonioni first premiered the film at cannes, it was met with a mixture of cheers and boos. and when watching l'avventura, it's obvious why; to the unenlightened, it may seem as though nothing happens in the film. or at least, nothing moves linearly in the fashion one might expect a conventional narrative to move forward with. anna first has a small tussle with her dad regarding sandro, which is never resolved. anna and sandro's tryst annoys claudia who feels…

an active participant in the construction of space, liminally moving through these walls and giving them voice, the pun in the title notwithstanding. transitory in its movement reflecting life's great beauties.

a really generic and didactic film, not necessarily bad but certainly doing the bare minimum to push the envelope for filmmaking, there's really nothing innovative going on here akin to the work done by spike lee or charles burnett before him. if those are the foundations, film has to move forward somewhere, not rotating around itself over and over again.
