I saw Wicked on Broadway last year AND I was in my High School’s production of The Wizard of Oz, so I do feel uniquely qualified to discuss all matters Oz. That’s a joke but I do love musicals and I do love The Wizard of Oz so I’ve been remaining cautiously optimistic about this through the media fiasco (holding space).
Sadly, the thing that stands out the most in Wicked is just how genuinely awful the visuals are. It was pissing me off so bad every time the nuclear-powered mega sun was shining through every crevasse of every room. It was so bad my wife noticed it. It makes it all the worse that The Wizard of Oz looks so amazing. The fact they let a movie this big look THIS terrible is not encouraging.
But beyond that, I did enjoy a lot of it. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were great in their roles and are otherworldly good singers. I like the music in Wicked and they killed every song.
To me, the story of Wicked sort of falls apart after they leave the University so it’ll be interesting to see how they adapt the second act. I think it’ll be really really difficult and I suspect people will like it a lot less. Regardless, somebody shake Jon M. Chu violently until he stops doing the stupid backlighting.
