Brady’s review published on Letterboxd:
I would rate this movie’s performance as a 10/10.
(My cat, who watched the whole movie with me, would give it a 14/10. Mostly because he wanted to eat all of the cute animals).
While I’d heard so many amazing things about The Wild Robot I was unsure if it would have the same influence on me personally. But I’ll be damned if an animated feature about a robot teaching a baby goose how to fly didn’t just become one of my favorite films of the year.
There’s a unique animation style that looks like a painting brought to life. Chris Sanders directs the hell out of this, bringing the stunning imagery of the island to life. And while it’s certainly a beautiful film to look at, that isn’t what makes The Wild Robot so special. It’s the journey of our characters that are the heart of this movie. It’s been a long time since a movie has affected me this much emotionally, and I watch a lot of movies. I can’t imagine the impact this had on the people who can relate to the story a lot more than I can. By using easy to understand metaphors to explore layered themes of family, motherhood and social acceptance this becomes much more than a simple animated tale.
While both the plot and character arcs are quite simple and very predictable, that’s easy to forgive when the story is told as effectively as this one is. The voice cast really brings these exceptional characters to life, infusing energy and passion into their parts. Lupita Nyong’o as Roz … what can I say. Tremendous performance all around. Kit Connor is very good as Brightbill and Pedro Pascal manages to be charming even in fox form. A lot of big-name talent rounds out the cast and everyone gets a moment to shine.
There’s a fair bit of comedy as well and thankfully it mostly lands. It’s not all low-brow kids jokes either; though there are a couple of those gags, most let the jokes are surprisingly mature. The darker humor balances out the tone nicely and a thrilling third act ensures this is a movie the whole family will enjoy.
I’d be remiss not to mention the music. Kris Bowers’ score is one of the better ones I’ve heard in an animated project. The original songs hit home too and are used at just the right moments. Unsurprisingly the movie does get sappy at times but most of the moments hit when they’re supposed to.
You guys know I can’t help but bring up another nitpick. The screenplay doesn’t always have the best flow, giving the movie a sectioned-off feel. But really, who cares. I laughed. I (almost) cried. The cat loved it. What more could you ask for?
