2nd Viewing of this really solidified my stance on it.
While somewhat impenetrable and occasionally too demanding from its artificial aesthetic, Anna Biller's The Love Witch stands tall as part of a strong retro-devoted streak of films that have come out in the past few years - alongside The Editor and The Duke of Burgundy.
I still have such a hard time figuring exactly what it is trying to say and for a film that is very much in the world of comedy it rarely actually makes you laugh. However, the ideas are strong as it rides the exploitation/supernatural horror train through some complex feminist statements on sexuality/love/gender roles. Between some tight intentionally 2D performances, stunning art design, and a story that gets weirder/eerier at the perfect pace, this is one refreshingly original film.
Strong movie and stoked to see what Anna Biller does next.
