The Love Witch

The Love Witch

| The Short Version: A tremendously titillating Toth tarot deco period piece (more literal than you think) that has the ovaries to deal with that awkward moment; when a handsome cop comes into your house to confront you with a bottle of your own urine.
And there's also a burlesque seminar on gender dynamics.

I don't really mind death. I've buried people before. People I really cared about. In the end we're all just compost anyway.

| The slightly less short version: Biller's uncompromising craft(wo)manship is singular. I can’t help but be in awe each time I lay eyes upon her work. Simultaneously wearing the hat of director, writer, editor, musician, set decorator and costume designer, you can tell that the filmmaker has touched, tweaked and tested every nook and cranny of her 35mm baby. Her personal metier crafts a truly unique universe, populated by female protagonists that remain some of the most attractive, funny, classiest and zaniest bipeds put to film.

Being a cinematic sibling to Viva, The Love Witch also elegantly walks a tightrope between pastiche and homage. The filmmaker's love for the 60s is unbridled, and her depiction is idiosyncratic. Both what's said and isn't said is hilarious, but amongst the hoots & hollers, the winks, nods and kinks, you'll find many layers of satire and social commentary carefully folded awaiting discovery.
The sexy, cheeky, musical intermezzos are surefire choking hazards for me. When first viewing The Love Witch, one particular instance during the Wiccan Renaissance fair had me in stitches so bad, my attempts at suppressing my manic laughter got so intense, I made the entire row of (squeaky wooden) seats shake for minutes on end.

What the hell, your coat, it's too bright!

My one gripe, besides the Pisces shaming (he did sorta deserve it) was the onscreen depiction of flying ointment being applied like body lotion. I know this isn't supposed to be a historical account of DIY witchery, but it's fairly common knowledge that the substance would traditionally have been applied to the genitals or anus for maximum effect and quick absorption. I'm not saying it took me out of the movie but it did evoke ye mighty frown.

| Verdict: Immaculate, everything just works. The Billerverse is completely insulated from the outside world. Not nearly as naive as a first impression would you have believe, this a gem of genuine artifice on a bed of contraband subversion, dawns a colorful coating I can't help but love.

Happily rewatched for the 52xhorror challenge, and a staple in my Feelgood Movies list.
