Okay, I'm giving this 4 stars but I actually don't know if I liked this film or not. It definitely needs a rewatch and I'd maybe even consider buying it to watch a bunch of times cause it was a pretty cool and interesting film (even if I didn't totally follow or like what was going on in the story).
If I were to rate the film on aesthetic alone though I'd figure out a way to hack into Letterboxd and give it 6/5 cause that aspect was so damn awesome. The look of the film was impeccably 70's while not shoddy at all. The music was also phenomenal. So they nailed the aesthetic so hard that right away I was thinking that I might want to buy this on blu-ray.
The storyline needed a lot of focus and attention and I had just had a couple beers before diving into this one so I don't think I was a fair judge of the film.
I've read some articles written by the director Anna Biller and I understand she's very much a feminist so I went into the film expecting that in the agenda.
Right off the bat I was confused and I said out loud to my friend "Wait, so is the director's message being told via the friend who is all 'Fuck the patriarchy' or is it through the Love Witch who says she just wants love and to give men their desires?"
This film is definitely not giving you a straightforward message and I definitely dug that. Gives you a lot to think about and work through but I need to do that on repeated viewings.
As for the plot, it was a bit long and involved a cult and a few people died and okay I did not give this the proper viewing it deserves. I will probably buy this and watch again to fully understand it.
Okay so I'm a dum-dum and this movie is really well made and super interesting so definitely check it out.
