Ah yes, back in the wonderful world of Tim Burton’s mind.
I was a pretty big fan of the original Beetlejuice, when I first watched it. I loved the goofiness, physical effect and comedy, story, and the fresh new ideas. This film had all but one: fresh new ideas.
This film is exactly what the average audience member signs up for which is a nostalgia fest. Nearly every story beat is near identical to the original. Am I the only one who rooted for Beetlejuice in both?
The storylines for this film do feel a little fresh. The film basically has three storylines that overlap towards the end: Catherine O’ Hara’s Winona Ryder, and Jenna Ortega’s. The storyline with Jenna Ortega is definitely a standout. The character that she meets definitely adds something to this film. I especially like how they revealed the history and true nature of him.
To finish, not much else in this film really stands out. The physical effects are nice, the soundtrack is great with 80s blaring, it’s pretty fun, but everything else feels mediocre. The cinematography, acting, editing, and the writing all seem meh.
