No, but why did I actually like this so much? This is like my Aftersun.
Forgot it was M Night directing until his cameo. Honestly, probably would have been better for both of us if I’d just continued to not remember. I’m so on guard about his films shitting all over mental or physical health (and like very poorly and in a sensationalized way) after Split and Old. I’m not sure when he started putting stuff out without studio backing, but I’m reasonably certain I’ve hated it all. And this is coming from someone who unironically enjoyed The Happening.
This was good though. I liked the setting, liked the characters, liked the tension building. Had to do the weird over the top OCD thing though, but at least we got Josh Hartnett and Haley Mills to make things less annoying (love them both).
Didn’t like that it seemed to set up a sequel, mostly because I think one would play up the mental health angle, which we can all tell M Night thinks is his strong suit, but I promise is not his strong suit. You know me, I’m usually like “Please give me more of the character’s psychology,” but this is the one director where I turn into the “Get a job. Stay away from her.” meme. Like please DO NOT give me more of the character’s psychology.
Edited to add: Christ on a cracker, like every one of y’all mutuals have reviewed this. If I don’t get to reading your review, I swear it’s not personal, there are just like 500 of them and my squirrel brain definitely activated 🙏🏻
