So there's this physical and spiritual breakdown I just had cuz of a damn Thai gay tiger movie...
Yeah, this is it. I like to reserve the T-word for films who truly exemplify it; bruh, this shit is genuinely transcendental. In two seemingly disparate but ultimately harmonious stories of love between two males, Apichatpong Weerasethakul displayed the utterly subsumptive and emancipatory power of love — primal, natural, genderless fucking love. Society wrongly declared desire as an affront to nature instead of an obvious accordance to its lovely, cosmic laws. That we are mindless animals to completely submit to it. Let us be beasts then.

Currently the lowest rated of the 2024 K. Kurosawa troika and this one's honestly my favorite?????? Like, woah, I didn't expect this to be one gratifying slow burn of a revenge movie. I might need to watch the 1998 original if people are underscoring this. Some might be hating on the fact, but I loved how wildly contrived this was. Ko Shibasaki is 2024's 2021 Tang Wei; a chilling female performance that won't be getting enough flowers
p.s. So geeked to see my man Hidetoshi Nijishima pop out from time to time but his non-storyline was literally pointless. Just eyecandy i guess

Kurosawa fanboys will go red in the face trying to aggrandize this pretty by-the-books thriller with a well-communicated but tepid critique of capitalism, no surprises hahaha. His message: middle class grifters trying to be Gold Star capitalists, betraying his own class for chump change, will never be truly as cunning and menacing as they thought they are. Wow, a film about arrested development due to sexual trauma, involving imagined aliens. What a mysterious concept.
Positives first: Cool mix of rotoscoping and traditional animation. The multiple switches in animation styles as plot device were inspired. There's a tender love story in here as well.
Now to my lukewarm take... At best, portraying sexual trauma as some mythic monster that we have to keep at arm's length all our lives until we reach critical mass and finally kill it…
