A couple of new owners have been confirmed for the former Colonia Tacos Guisados space in Whittier: none other than Steven and Jay Arroyo. The well-known restaurateur brothers have been behind a number of spots across greater Los Angeles over the years, including Beverly Boulevard’s casual taqueria Escuela.

The new Arroyo project in Whittier actually feels like a casual extension of Escuela proper, as the brothers have just officially opened the doors to La Otra Taqueria. The name is a direct take from the full title of Steven Arroyo’s La Otra Taqueria Escuela, but is now planting a flag as something all its own well southeast of the original. As for the food, expect straightforward carnitas, carne asada, shrimp, and chicken tacos, plus burritos and the like.

This new project is just the latest Whittier restaurant iteration for brother Jay Arroyo. Along with partner Nikomi Arroyo, he also operates wine bar Phlight on Bright Avenue, and the whole family is involved in Whittier sandwich shop The Deli Up, which opened last year.

This new La Otra Taqueria could be landing at the perfect time for the city of Whittier. The suburban area has seen an influx of new dining options of late, from a soon-to-open brewery, restaurant, and food hall to Top Chef participant Katsuji Tanabe’s prime new steakhouse The Nixon Chops & Whiskey. La Otra Taqueria is soft open in Whittier as of this weekend.
