Dough Box Wants to Launch a Deep Dish Pizza Revolution in East LA

A contender in the Chicago-style pizza world has arrived

Eastsiders, rejoice; Dough Box Pizza & Bread is here for all your upcoming deep dish pizza needs. The upstart takeaway and delivery-only concept launches March 2 in the East LA / City Terrace area east of Downtown, with plans to bring Chicago-style deep dish pies to the masses.

Co-founder Alexandra Gonzalez knows a thing or two about deep dish, having previously worked at Hollywood Pies alongside David Miscimarra years ago. Now working with Tony Hernandez (Bread Lounge, Proof), Gonzalez has big plans to turn the Eastside on to big, cheesy deep dish pizza, one order at a time. Much like the start of Hollywood Pies back in the day, Dough Box will for a time operate only as a takeaway or delivery option, with runners bringing pizzas out from the commissary kitchen to waiting customers. The delivery range will run five miles, which should include Downtown.

There are other options than just deep dish on the Dough Box menu, including a 9-inch thin crust pizza available for just $10. You’ll also be able to get waffles for dessert and, soon enough, breads and more from Hernandez.

The plan, Gonzalez says, is to ultimately transfer into something more retail-friendly with seating and all-day hours. That would mean coffee in the morning, an assortment of breads, and pizza come dinnertime. Of course that’s all a long ways off, so for now the pair are doing dinner service exclusively, six nights a week (closed Mondays).

You can see the menu for Dough Box here, and come March 2 you’ll be able to order for yourself. Hours run 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. — just be sure to allow that crucial hour for them to actually make your huge Chicago-style pizza.
