Yesterday came word that French restaurateur Thierry Perez and chef Mark Gold had pulled the plug on their recent Manhattan Beach installment, Chez Soi, a California-style eatery serving dishes with seasonal ingredients and occasional European technique. Based on a "5-Day Notice to Pay Rent or Quit," it's fair to say money issues lead to Chez Soi's quick demise, and here now Perez on the shutter:
After few issues with Chef Mark Gold. The menu went in the different direction from the original concept of Chez soi. Mark never understood and learned how to cook for our local guests and he he was very inconsistent so it affected the service a lot ... After all these I decided for some personal health issue (the past few months) to sale the restaurant and I take a break and take care my health. I think it was the best for everybody to sale the restaurant and moved forward in the different. I'm very proud of my family and I need to be there for them ... I will be stronger with a new concept.Meanwhile, Gold states:
I did not agree with Thierry's business practices and when he crossed the line personally, I felt it was time to leave immediately! I have developed relationships with farmers and purveyors over the past 20 years of being a chef in LA. I did not want to jeopardize my relationship with them as well. So, Chez Soi has been sold to a new group, meanwhile Perez is figuring out his next move.
