The Minimalists Interview Derek Sivers

Link

Derek Sivers is perhaps best known for starting CDBaby and being a big part of the independent music scene in the early days of the web, but he’s written and presented a lot since then on topics related to creativity, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Always a treat hearing him speak. (There’s a fair bit of preamble in this episode so you may want to skip to the 18:00 mark to get to the interview.) #minimalism

Whoa! First Look at Segway F3, Seems Like a Hit

Last month I mentioned I’ve been eager to see which new Segway scooter might be a contender for replacing my aging F30, and I was temporarily distracted by the first reviews of the MAX G3. But honestly, it’s just too big, too heavy, and too expensive for what I’m in the market for.

The F3 is now getting its moment in the sun, and from what I’m seeing so far, it seems like a truly excellent ride for a remarkable price (potential tariff insanity notwithstanding). I think it’s very likely this will be my new #micromobility vehicle come summertime. 😎

NYC Congestion Pricing Will Stay (For Now)

So much for all that performative nonsense about “long live the king” which really went over with New Yorkers like a lead balloon. 🙄

Anyway, this is excellent news and provides a lengthy period of additional time where more data can be collected and analyzed proving the Congestion Relief Zone tolling has been one of the most successful projects to decrease car dependency in a dense urban core in American history.

Powered by the Sun (and Wind): U.S. Fossil Fuel Generation Now Below 50%

Incredible news. 🙌

I’ve mentioned this in passing before, but I will reiterate it here in the strongest terms: advances in solar power generation combined with advances in battery technology is ushering in an unbelievable paradigm shift in how electricity gets produced (and by whom!).

If we’re in “the Age of” anything right now after the rise of computers/the Internet, it’s the Age of Solar. (And yes, wind and other renewable energy sources are a factor as well.)

Zootopia 2 Presentation at CinemaCon, Ke Huy Quan as “Gary the Snake”

Zootopia is one of my favorite Disney #movies, no joke. It’s right up there with the best of the best. I believe I actually enjoy it more than my kids do, who for inexplicable reasons find it only mildly amusing. I remember feeling absolutely blown away by it when I first saw it in my local cinema, and I simply cannot wait for a similar feeling when the sequel comes out. Fingers/toes/paws crossed! 🐾

I Guess That MAGA Strategy was Full of Holes (Just Like Your Cheese Hat)

Defenders of freedom and the rule of law in America won big today. Even the outcome of the race in Florida was ominous for future MAGA prospects. Between this great news and the amazing accomplishment of Senator Cory Booker—who is now officially the G.O.A.T.—I am flying high tonight.

Wow, #politics feels good for a change. 🥹 🙌

AI Has Failed AI (Don’t Just Blame Apple)

I’m not in the habit of linking to CNN regularly, but this is just so good. Author Allison Morrow, a Senior Writer for CNN Business, has summed up the situation with Apple’s disastrous, botched rollout of “Apple Intelligence” as not merely a goof unique to Apple but systemic to the entire #GenerativeAI technology space.

My favorite quote, as she responds to Kevin Roose’ blethering about how Apple should “keep pushing AI into its products and just get used to the idea that those features may be unpolished and a little too advanced for the average user”, her comeback:

“To what end?”

Exactly.

Inspired by a Vlog of the Grand Canyon

I feel pretty silly that I’m a grown man, in my 40s, living on the west coast of the U.S. of A., and I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon nor have I ever been to Yellowstone! I’ve also lived in Oregon for close to a decade now and I still haven’t been to Crater Lake!

One of the reasons I’m so thrilled to be on my #NomadLifestyle journey is I can finally start crossing off bucket items like this. 😍

Incentivizing E-bikes in the Places Where They are Needed

This is neat idea: offering rebates to help subsidize #micromobility purchases in order to replace trips by car in specific regions/neighborhoods. (Obviously my preference would be to offer broad subsidies at high levels of city or state governments. But programs like this are certainly far better than nothing!)

Making the Dems Great Again (Bernie & AOC)

Nobody does person-on-the-street interviews like Don Lemon. He’s just great at this stuff, and honestly that was the first clue I got back in October/early November 2024 that something was off about the Harris campaign. Don Lemon’s interviews picked up on a thread of the zeitgeist I wasn’t seeing anywhere else.

Lately he’s been out asking lots of folks what they think about Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the responses have been fascinating. It’s incredibly apparent that they are tapping into a wing of the Democratic Party base which has been supremely frustrated over the past couple of years. We desperately need an energetic, youth-focused, center-left populist movement in American #politics and the Dems would be wise to stop taking this demographic for granted. It’s the kind of mojo the party needs in full force right now.
