フォーチュン・クッキーは日本発祥

アメリカの中華街から広まり、世界中で有名なフォーチュン・クッキーだが不思議なことに中国大陸では全く見あたらない。この謎はフォーチュン・クッキーが日本発祥ということで説明がつく。日本の京都にある総本家宝玉堂にはフォーチュン・クッキーとまるでそっくりのせんべいがあり、おみくじも入っている。1920年代や30年代にはカリフォルニアの日系移民の多くがチョプスイ・レストランを開き、アメリカナイズされた中国料理を提供していたが、そうしたレストランにフォーチュン・クッキーが配達されていたという。第二次世界大戦時にカリフォルニアの日系アメリカ人が収容所送りになった間に中華街レストランがつくるフォーチュン・クッキーがオリジナルを追い越すまでになったと考えられている。
