Bast was a member of the Nora tribe and minor antagonist in Horizon Zero Dawn.
History[]
Horizon Zero Dawn[]
In his early years, Bast did not initially display any hostile intentions towards Aloy. His confusion toward Aloy was evident when one of the Nora mothers shepherded the children away, explicitly telling them that Aloy was an outcast and was to be shunned.[1] Later on, he threw a rock at Aloy, calling her a "No-Mother" and telling her to stay away from them.[2]
According to Bast, he spent his entire life training in preparation for Proving.[3] He was also a nuisance to other Nora at times.[4]
Years later, when Aloy joined the Blessing alongside Bast, she gave him a friendly smile, but he shook his head and turned away. The two properly met again when she arrived at the bed-house in Mother's Heart in preparation for the Proving. Bast made his dislike of Aloy clear and began harassing her, calling the rock incident a "treasured memory". Vala, another participant in the Proving, berated Bast and told him to cut it out. He taunted Aloy for "trying to dress like a Nora" and told her that she did not belong in the Proving. When Aloy talked back to him, he backed off.[5]
During the Proving, after Aloy acquired a Proving Trophy, Bast shot it out of her hands and broke it, forcing Aloy to hunt for another one and temporarily putting her in last place. Much to Bast's anger, Aloy managed to overtake them all and finished just ahead of him and Vala. He protested that Aloy cheated, but the proctor ignored him as she announced Aloy the winner. Suddenly, members of the Eclipse appeared and attacked them all, killing some of the Nora present. Under heavy fire, he agreed to help Vala and Aloy, and held off the Eclipse long enough for a few of the other candidates to escape. When he saw Vala killed by a Deathbringer Gun, he recklessly tried to run to her side, only to meet the same fate immediately after.[6]
Legacy[]
Bast and Vala would be remembered by the survivors of the massacre as heroes.
Personality[]
Bast was shown to be devout in the traditions of the Nora, including the shunning of outcasts. He had a callous and arrogant attitude, to other Nora[4] and especially towards outcasts; he had no qualms about throwing rocks at Aloy as a child,[2] as well as sabotaging her and lying in an attempt to get her disqualified during the Proving.[6] However, before being told that Aloy was to be shunned, he seemed passive towards her, looking on at her before being told how he should act towards her.[1] He also has a somewhat cowardly attitude, being quick to back down when a fellow Nora child told him to stop throwing rocks.[2] or when Aloy stood up to him.[5]
Despite his overall unlikable demeanor, Bast proved in his final minutes of life to possess courage, putting his grievances with Aloy aside and fighting against the Eclipse alongside her long enough to save the lives of the other surviving candidates.[6]
