- "Hel-LO!"
- ―Aloy, upon picking up a Deathbringer Gun
Deathbringer Guns are heavy machine guns in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. It is dropped by heavy human enemies and Deathbringers (only in Zero Dawn), capable of dealing immense impact and tear damage.
How to obtain[]
In Horizon Zero Dawn[]
Deathbringer Guns are dropped by Heavy-type Eclipse cultists, but can also be torn from Deathbringers themselves. Using weapons that deal tear damage will remove these weapons, dropping it and allowing it to be used by Aloy.
In Horizon Forbidden West[]
Deathbringer Guns are dropped by heavy class humans from the Eclipse, Quen Imperial Guards, Regalla's Rebels, and the Sons of Prometheus. However, they can also be picked up and used by their allies if the original wielder was killed. They can also be found on weapon racks within rebel encampments.
Usage[]
In Horizon Zero Dawn[]
Fired from the hip, belt-fed, and dealing 100 damage per shot, this weapon comes with a 60-round magazine and fires large-caliber bullets. If one hits the right spots, this gun can kill an entire Eclipse squad before the magazine is spent and the gun has to be dropped, as it cannot be reloaded.
In Horizon Forbidden West[]
Compared to its version in Zero Dawn, its base damage has been reduced to 20 (though this can be increased from skills) but 75 shots before running out of ammo. It also has a "ramp-up" where holding the trigger will increase the rate of fire, though the recoil can quickly become uncontrollable at its maximum fire rate.
Advantages
- High damage, even more so on critical hits or against soft (human) targets.
- Good rate of fire and fast-moving rounds, great for close to medium range.
- Removes armor and components with ease.
- Large magazine.
Disadvantages
- Ammunition can be depleted quickly.
- Poor accuracy beyond medium range.
- Continuous firing in full-auto increases bullet spread, reducing accuracy.
- Like all heavy weapons, Aloy is much slower when carrying it.
- In Forbidden West, they will overheat and stop firing for a while if fired continuously for long enough.
History[]
Deathbringer guns are normally mounted on the Deathbringers, ancient war machines made centuries before Aloy was born. However, the Eclipse cult put them to good use. Upon finding a Deathbringer that cannot be brought back online, the guns are detached and used as heavy assault weapons.
The Deathbringer gun first enters the stage carried by an Eclipse Cultist leader who leads a devastating attack on the Proving ceremony. Upon seeing the remaining Nora Braves putting up a good fight, killing many of his fighters, the leader leaves for a moment and returns with the gun. He uses it to mow down several braves, including Bast and Vala, before Aloy takes him out. Aloy can then use the gun herself to quickly kill the rest of the cultists.
From then on, the Deathbringer gun can be picked up from heavy Eclipse fighters or shot off of Deathbringers.
Trivia[]
- The Deathbringer gun seems to have a much higher fire rate while mounted on a Deathbringer chassis. This may be because, while dismounted, the gun's magazine is fairly limited, and this helps limit ammunition usage.
- Deathbringers carry up to three of these weapons.
- The Deathbringer gun is the only usable weapon from the Old World.
