"Trying to live up to the glory of the Nora hasn't killed me yet. But if it has to... I'm willing."
―Marea

Marea is a minor character in Horizon Zero Dawn. She was a Nora Brave who lived in the Nora settlement of Mother's Crown. Like all Braves, she was ready to die in defense of the Nora territorial Sacred Lands. She got the type of death she wished for, dying in defense against an attack on the Sacred Lands by the Shadow Carja cult known as the Eclipse.

History[]

Marea was born in the Nora settlement of Mother's Vigil, which later came to be known as the Forsaken Village after it was destroyed by the Carja in one of their raids on Nora Settlements, known as the Red Raids. Marea was one of the few who escaped. She was fifteen years old at the time.

Like the Nora huntress Aloy, Marea won the Proving the year she undertook it, emerging victorious despite a broken ankle. Her requested boon was to be stationed at Mother's Crown, to lead the Braves of the settlement in defense of the Nora Sacred Lands border, as they had done many years prior during the Red Raids.

When Aloy visited Mother's Crown on her Seeker's quest to the Carja capital Meridian, Marea advised her on getting through the border to the Carja Sundom. She advised her to induce the border fort at Daytower to allow her to enter the Sundom by killing the Corrupted machines that had infested the Nora Sacred Land. During their conversation, she briefly outlined her early life and how she came to be at Mother's Crown, declaring to Aloy that she was ready to die living up to the glory of the Nora if necessary. Sometime later, she indeed did so, fighting and dying just outside the Nora Main Embrace Gate in an effort to prevent the invading Eclipse from reaching The Embrace, the capital region of the Sacred Lands. Aloy found her corpse lying on the road just outside the gate, along with those of the other Braves who had died in the battle.

Trivia[]

  • Marea is the Spanish word for tide.
  • Marea's initial dialogue with Aloy will change slightly depending on whether Revenge of the Nora has been completed. Her lines will also change if Aloy has already cleared at least two Corrupted Zones.
  • Despite being a Brave, Marea has the Seeker face paint.
