"Erumpent horns, tails, and the Exploding Fluid are all used in potions, though classified Class B Tradeable Materials"
— Erumpent horn's use in potions[src]

An Erumpent horn was the horn of an Erumpent, a magical beast. The horn contained a fluid that caused whatever it was injected into to explode. They were highly prized as potion ingredients, but were listed as a Class-B Tradeable Material, limiting trade, likely due to the danger they posed.[1] They could also be used as decorations.[4]

History[]

During the 1990–1991 school year, a wizard dropped an Erumpent horn in Northumberland, causing an explosion. Fortunately, wizards at the scene were able to protect Muggle bystanders. The incident was investigated and covered up by the British Ministry of Magic. Among those who handed the case was Jacob's sibling, who was working with the Ministry as part of their student programme.[5]

Luna Lovegood's home was destroyed by an Erumpent horn that her father Xenophilius claimed to be the horn of a Crumple-Horned Snorkack. He proudly displayed it despite the warnings given to him by Hermione Granger, and he accidentally blew it up while trying to stop her, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley from escaping Death Eaters shortly after Christmas in 1997.[2]

During the Calamity which affected the wizarding world in the 2010s, Erumpent horns were used as ingredients in the brewing of the Tonic for Trace Detection by wizards and witches of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.[3]

Following several reports of exploding caravans as a result of transporting Erumpent horn, the International Magical Trading Standards Body wrote a paper stating that grinding Erumpent horn made it far less volatile for travel. Members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force read this paper, enabling them to better utilise Erumpent horns when brewing the Tonic for Trace Detection, decreasing the amount of time it took to brew the potion.[3]
