Fire departments collaborate for training

VALLEY SPRINGS — On Sunday, Jan. 5, several area fire departments collaborated on training exercises throughout the morning and afternoon. In attendance were Valley Springs Fire Department, Diamond City Fire Department, Harmon Fire Department, Lead Hill Fire Department, Omaha Fire Department and Western Grove Fire Department.

City Council meeting Thursday

Harrison City Council will hold a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in Council Chambers at City Hall, 118 Industrial Park Road. The community is welcome to attend and the opportunity to make public comments will be given.

2024 Year in Review: Harrison, Arkansas

As 2024 concludes, Harrison celebrates a year of meaningful progress, community collaboration, and impactful achievements. Together, we have worked to enhance our quality of life, improve infrastructure, and create an environment where citizens feel safe. Here are some of the highlights of this successful year:

Bradford becomes judge

Wes Bradford was sworn in on Wednesday, Jan. 1 as the new District Judge by Circuit Judge John Putman. Bradford's wife Carol held the family Bible used for the swearing in. The ceremony was held in the District Courtroom in the J. Smith Henley Federal Building.

Free public forum on FOIA

A free public forum, designed to discuss the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act of 1967, has been scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9, from 6-9 p.m. in the large convention room of the Signature Bank Building in Harrison. The building is located one block north of the Boone County Court Park on Main Street and is situated directly across the Street from the Historic Harrison Hotel Seville.

Future of Buffalo River Conservation Committee uncertain

The Buffalo River Conservation Commission (BRCC) met via internet in a Zoom meeting on morning, Dec. 20. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward said the meeting's main objective was to gather any last minute information from its subcommittees to add to the annual report that will be presented to the governor and the public next month.

City Council approves budget, raise for mayor

The 2025 budget was approved at the Dec. 19 meeting of the Harrison City Council. Luke Feighert, finance director for the City of Harrison presented some notes on the budget — including anticipated funds from Creekside Community Center memberships and a raise for the mayor.

Harrison Preschool highly ranked

The leadership and staff at Harrison Preschool work hard to provide students with a caring, safe, effective learning environment focused on preparing children for their future life and learning. The Arkansas LEARNS Act of 2023 reorganized and restructured protocols, placing early childhood programs (including preschools) under the authority of the state Department of Education.

2024 "Heart of a Hero" award presented

Holt Memorial Chapel has announced Monica Quinn of Legacy Hospice as the 2024 recipient of the Glenna Ragan Heart of a Hero End-of-Life Caregiver Award. “This award honors caregivers who exemplify extraordinary compassion and dedication in providing care to individuals and families during life’s most challenging moments,” said the announcement.

LITTLE ROCK — Friday, the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services, Workforce Policy and Innovation, in conjunction with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, announced Arkansas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained stable at 3.3% between October and November.
Providence, RI — In a civil complaint filed in Rhode Island, the Justice Department alleges that CVS Pharmacy Inc. and various subsidiaries (collectively, CVS) filled unlawful prescriptions in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and sought reimbursement from federal healthcare programs for unlawful prescriptions in violation of the False Claims Act (FCA). CVS is the country’s largest pharmacy chain, with more than 9,000 pharmacies across the United States.
The statewide gas price average in Arkansas was $2.66 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel on Thursday, according to the AAA Arkansas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is five cents more compared to that day last week and is three cents less per gallon compared to that day last year.

HHS awards $306 million in Avian Flu monitoring

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it would award $306 million dollars to continue its H5N1 Avian Flu response. While CDC’s assessment of the risk of avian influenza to the general public remains low, USDA and HHS continue to closely collaborate with Federal, State, local, industry and other stakeholders to protect human health, animal health, and food safety.

Thais Gentle “Cricket” LPN

It has been said, “A nurse is not what you do. It is what you are.” Thais Gentle, LPN, better known by her friends and co-workers as “Cricket,” embodies her profession. “I started kind of late in life, but I’ve always wanted to be a nurse,” she explained. “I guess I just never had the opportunity. Then one day I did,” she said. “The opportunity came up. I went to school. I was still in nursing school when I got a job PRN (a term meaning “as needed” rather than a regular schedule) at NARMC on the third floor. Worked PRN until I got my license. Started working full-time the next day on third floor nights. I worked there 8 ½ years,” she proudly explained.

It’s hard to have a happy holiday when you’re arrested for drunk driving. Keep the season merry and bright by following the law and refusing to drink and drive. During this busy winter holiday season, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Region 7, which includes Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska is teaming up with local law enforcement agencies to remind drivers: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
The Christmas Play at Restoration Life Fellowship was wonderful. The Characters did a very good job with their presentations. All of the Rylee family, Amanda, Christal, Jamie & Jackie put their whole heart in to presenting the story of Jesus' birth. There was a very good attendance for the play.
