Neighborhood Watch: Coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

The movement in Urbana to start a Neighborhood Watch Program, spearheaded by Assistant City Clerk, Brittany Crawford, is well-timed with Dallas County law enforcement under the new sheriff, Darren Cheek. Cheek included in his campaign that he’d like to bring Neighborhood Watches to Dallas County. Citizens of Urbana, after several recent break-ins, are ready to be the pilot Neighborhood Watch program for Dallas County.

Letter to the Editor - Kelley

As the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) works to streamline federal operations and reduce spending, non-profit organizations in Buffalo and Dallas County may soon begin experiencing the downstream effects of these budget adjustments. Many local non-profits that previously relied on federal funding now face uncertain futures as government efficiency measures reshape the funding landscape.

DCEDG Shares Community Growth from 2024

The strong foundations supporting economic development in our community begin with strong relationships. Effective relationships must be in place long before progress is ever seen. They are the result of slow, steady, time-consuming work done by community leaders. The time to establish these relationships is before you need them, and not waiting until you need something, to begin communicating. This is a basic understanding shared by our leaders, and what makes our Dallas County region so successful. The Dallas County Economic Development Group (DCEDG) works alongside these leaders to create even greater opportunities for economic growth in our region.

The Rockwood Files: Left and right

When our three college kids are home for a visit and we go out to eat, we follow a protocol. We usually ask for a big booth and slide into it in a particular order – with our two left-handed kids sitting together. Over the years, we’ve learned that when a lefty sits to the right of a righty, elbows collide. So, we’ve learned to arrange ourselves to give everyone room to move, no matter which hand holds the fork.

On January 15 this year, the FDA banned red dye no. 3. What exactly does that mean? Food dyes are substances added to foods that change the color; originally synthesized from coal tar and petroleum. Walk into any grocery store in the US and you’re able to find a package of these artificial colors (PubMed-Toxicology of Food Dyes) to add to your foods. But why is the banned list in the US so short? Although not banned in Europe, products face much heavier regulation, making many companies that sell products in both the US and the EU have different ingredients/recipes for the same product.
Harvard University explained that in 2023, the surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, declared social isolation an epidemic. Murthy reported that loneliness is more than a bad feeling. Loneliness is a significant public health risk for individuals and society.
My apologies to my unknown relatives in Canada for the unpleasant political winds emanating from below our border.
There are more than 283 million cars in use in the United States. Inside that gigantic number are more than 60 car makers and 1,200 different models. But only about 10 paint colors are used, and more than 70 percent of all those cars are black, white, gray, or silver.
In my opinion, the best cookie is the Monster recipe,

Beau’s Mom Prom: Women’s night out; education/grief support fundraising campaign

According to the team at Beau Fournier Memorial Fund, Beau was nearly an unbelievably loving child, who was always looking for ways to help other children and brighten the day for others. That’s what makes his premature passing May 19, 2020, so difficult to understand. And it’s what has spurred his mother, Sammi McCleary, into action, making sure that Beau’s efforts to lighten others’ loads continues. Through the memorial fund, which was founded in Beau’s name, and with additional funding from Stand For the Silent (STFS)*, children in Buffalo, Missouri, grades PreK-8th don’t have to worry about buying school supplies each year, other parents in the community who lose children have access to counseling, and scholarships help make college more affordable for two local students each year.

Notes from Creekside - What should you eat before and after intense exercise?

Well, I finished my first 5k for this year. I am always wanting to eat the best for performance.

Ozark's RFD - Enough with the cold weather

It didn’t take long for me to get enough winter after the ice and cold weather that enveloped the Ozarks in early January.

Notes from Creekside - I have a goal, what is yours?

When studying for Health Coaching or other goal setting learning activities, many courses suggest that a person set S.M.A.R.T. GOALS. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound.

EnJOYable Journey - Remembering the winter storms

Over the years, inclement weather made it challenging to publish the paper on time on several occasions. Since I lived in town during those years, I would manage to get to work by sliding the few blocks over to Lincoln Street. Sometimes, I’d beg for a ride from my husband on his way to work.

The Rockwood Files: For the love of making

The closest I've ever come to getting into a physical fight happened when I was five. I sat at a round table coloring pictures alongside a few other Kindergartners. We were told to share the small pile of colors our teacher placed at the table's center. But then one kid — there's always that one kid — decided she wanted the red crayon all to herself.

EnJOYable Journey - The Song That Never Ends

I figured out what’s been wrong the past few weeks. I can’t sing.
