Overview
Tophats, also known as hat notes, are notices placed at the top of articles or sections, hence the term "hat". They are used for a variety of purposes, including:
- Informing readers that an article is undergoing or requires maintenance (cleanup, images, verification, etc)
- Informing readers of similarly named or related articles, including disambiguation
- Informing readers of spoilers, cheats, modifications or content that otherwise affects a player's playthrough
Formatting
The key principles for tophat usage is:
- Place tophats at the very top of an article or section (do not place them after infoboxes or underneath images)
- Do not use too many tophats (consider whether one or two can be repurposed or achieve the same notice)
- Link directly to other articles (unless things become cluttered, see #4)
- Do not over-clutter the tophat with information.
Tophats should pertain to an entire section or article; do not prepend tophats which are only relevant to a small piece of information at the top of an article. Consider whether smaller notices or templates, such as {{Fact}} instead of {{Verify}}, or {{EEV}} instead of {{Version}}, are more appropriate and less confusing.
Order
The type of tophat used determines its position amongst other tophats:
- Disambiguation - if the user is looking for a different page
- Content - content-specific notices, such as spoilers, cheats, modifications, etc.
- Maintenance - if the page is undergoing or requires maintenance

Disambiguation templates are small and are designed to blend in better with articles.

Content tophats
Content templates feature red accents and are designed to warn the user of potential spoilers or content-specific prerequisites.

This mission can be permanently missed in a save file, which means that the player should complete Tophats before that mission if they want to achieve 100% completion and unlock all achievements/trophies.
