I can see the senior IBM guy going through the supplies at a steady rate, given the caliber of people IBM handle for day to day operations work.
Sadly with my above example.. I was the guy called in at 6am, for that exact situation for another outsourcing company, who will remain nameless.

IBM monkey replaces correct broken disk but RAID is borked
IBM monkey runs chkdsk /fix on the broken volume
IBM monkey notices Chkdsk breaking the volume more, panic and hits the reset button.
IBM monkey reboots NAS, and the chkdsk restarts, pooches the volume even more..
Someone who actually KNOWS what they are doing is called around 6am, and it takes the rest of the time to fix the issue, restore backups, and see to it that someone meets with a "terrible accident"
The last hour would have been devoted to sourcing a big enough bag of lime, a shovel, and a roll of carpet.

Software patents are an incredibly damaging and stupid thing. the h.264 standard is merely a way of locking up all the video content again, it is the slippery slope back to the bad old days where only a few companies control how to present video.
The fact that Mr Jobs and Mr Ballmer agree on it should be sending alarm bells ringing across the whole content community.

As soon as your passport is scanned through Israel border control, they have an official copy of all your details, which can be cloned in their passport factory.
Biometrics are not designed to repel official high level cloning of passports, just the low level Nigerian stuff.

Regardless of WHAT fucking platform was running, so manager made the decision that the existing backup proceedures were good enough.
1) Backup/redundancy systems were not up to par
2) System was shoddy to begin with
3) They were penny pinching
4) A clueless manager may or may not have killed a backup prematurely
5) There were too cheap to buy additonal space, despite space being as cheap as dirt these days
One big clusterfuck all around, and it's all down to system mangement NOT what platform is being used.
That clusterfuck, is to be laid squarely at the feet of what ever IT "manager" was in charge.
Said IT manager, should meet with a tragic accident if there was any justice in the world.
I have been an IT tech in such companies. When there was THAT level of penny pinching, when it came to system stability and backups, if I wasn't allowed to fix it, or management didn't see the massive oncoming fuckey that was going to happen... I quit and found a better job.
I its my personal HATE, fixing shit like that. I really feel for the poor techs who are trying to sort that crap pile out. If your reading this boys (or girls) I would march in to the office, and get a commitment in writing to fix the system once this is all done and if they even hesitate to give it to you, quit on the spot. Once this is fixed, it's only a matter of time before it happens again, unless they do a major re-engineer of the system, which means spending dollars.. lots and lots of dollars.
It's not worth the ulcer, lost nights, stress and bullshit.
Go and work for a company with some fucking brains, and a reasoniable idea of what constitutes a backup and recover plan.

I am working within the animation industry industry at the moment, and a lot of smaller studios have *nix boxes for their rendering, but everything else is PC, and Mac.
What I am seeing now, is Mac is losing ground to PC, because Mac opensource solutions to problems, suck.
Samba can't do anything near what AD can, So I am seeing shops move to AD servers and file servers, because, they do the job, and I can install them in 2 hrs.
With a *nix box, its 2 hrs of install + 8+ hrs or bugs, kernel recompiles, strange issues, driver hunting, hacking, kicking, screaming.
Not to mention all the app compatibily issues. If you wanted to run a *nix solution in a large or medium business, then you need to retest and re write a whole mess of apps. The business case AGAINST spending that money is HUGE. You spend half the money on a decient BOFH, and have solid stable network.
When they are paying me to be there by the hour, open source just looses on the numbers game. Any gain in no cost software, is lost with support time.
Government deployments don't count, because government departments have HUGE budgets for stuff like this, and never have to worry about being profitible. They can spend all they like on app writing, testing and creation.
I hate MS's buggy, ugly OS as much as the next man, but from a BUSINESS point of view, MS is a better choice.
If a better option comes up, then I will reccomend it. I have quiet optimism for Google OS, but I will see what she looks like, with the lights on first.

I just came off a week averaging 9 hrs a day, and was in the office till 1am this morning, re imaging a render farm, that was plagued with virii.
No girl I know in IT would show that kind of work ethic, they would have piked off much earlier than that.
Women don't want to do IT, because for the most part, it is a thankless job, with long hours, and lots of monotony. They would rather do touchy feely stuff like nursing, marketing or marrying a rich lawyer.
I have worked in the health care industry, and the nurses there are 99% female. So why don't we have massive campaigns to get more men into nursing?
I would love more women in IT, but it'll never happen, well not above anything more than helldesk.
