Amazon cloud sinks, smothers Web 2.0 darlings

Combat Wombat
Boffin

Well....

It might be more costly, but once you factor in the total cost of an outage... there is no comparison.

So far... reddit has been down for about 8 hours.

So, lets do some rough maths... based on a $500 man company, who moves their services to the magical cloud.

So... your cloud solution shits itself and dies... so you now have about 500 people sitting around twiddling their thumbs.

Say the average pay across the company is $30/hr

so 500 x 30$/hr x 8 hrs = $120,000

That 8 hr outage has just cost you $120, 000 in productivity, not to mention the loss in reputation to your customers etc.

Now, I will BET that the guys who write the contracts for cloud hosting have various "all care, no responsibly" clauses written into the contract, which means you can't recoup any of that loss.

Say this sort of outage happens, 5 times in a year..

That's about $6 million pissed away because you don't control your servers or devices.

Now add all the risk factors surrounding security of your data.

Not to mention there is no way of independently verifying that your cloud providers are doing what they say they are.. or that their data center is not staffed with inbred, lead poisoned, brain damaged monkeys.

I stand by my earlier statement. Companies who trust the cloud, get everything they deserve.

Combat Wombat
FAIL

It's stuff like this..

that should be held up when ever your boss mentions any hint of going to the "cloud"

If this were your business.. you'd be hosed, and you'd have zero control over getting the solution resolved.

Not only that, but because your not a super platinum, high paying customer.. you are condemned to sit in a queue until they get to you.

Fornicate everything about the "cloud" with an iron stick.

If you don't control the iron, you don't control the risk.

Do not want...

So essentially Google are renting you an OS/Hardware combo ?

I like my desktop, which I can access anytime I like... which doesn't require me to pay protection money to Google, and I am safe in knowing that my personal files aren't being mined for marketing data.

If their servers shit themselves and die (see current Amazon cloud status), its a paperweight.

If my internet connection shits itself and dies, it's a paperweight.

Season of TV shows blown out of cloud... for good

Combat Wombat
FAIL

This doesn't surprise me...

I used to work supporting a certain TV show, dealing with supernatural themes.... and well they were tighter than a Jewish Scottish ducks butt when it came to spending on critical IT stuff.

They had all their seasons work on one big 16Tb raid, and NO off site or other backups.

One day the RAID started squawking because 1 disk had failed... but instead of calling us... the producer took it upon himself to swap the disk out.

Pulled 1 disk oooops wrong disk .. pulled 2nd disk.. oooops wrong disk.... pull 3rd disk... still wrong disk... fuck....

RAID Is now killed...

Oh will I will just reinsert all the disks and run Chkdsk..

It was only AFTER he did all this, he called us..

Yeah.. that was a fun conversation..

I agree that the whole could push is a push for big companies to outsource their server ops to India but I don't see that happening any time in the next 10 years. With every Telco in the US trying to push up the cost of data links, it will have a chilling effect on the cloud push.

Also as mentioned above, I am sure once companies realize they are are having their precious data sitting in a data center in India, and there are the inevitable data scandals where precious data ends up in the public sphere... they'll slam into full reverse and go back to re hosting locally with the newer generation of low power Atom servers.

Skype to test advertising

Combat Wombat
Badgers

I won't see ads

Ads will be blocked, because;

1) Fuck you I pay for the service... I shouldn't be bombed with ads

2) Ad's are a security risk, as they usually come from dodgy 3rd party ad servers

I really hope skype doesn't jump the shark. I really enjoy being able to make secure, free calls to friends around the world.

I find people bitching about skype call quality usually have a 3rd rate ISP on one end of the call.

I have been using it for years, and I have never had an issue talking to friends. Calls have always been clear and pretty stable.

I guess people are blaming skype in a lot of cases where it is more the ISP to blame.

The node SNAFU was entirely their fault, but given that was the first major outage in a few years, that was a pretty good effort.

So bollocks to advertising! Keep making a product I am happy to use, which does what I want it to, and doesn't contain ads.

I can hear the linux fanboys on various forums crying about the lack of a skype client, and they have been for ages.

It's linux desktop. No one cares about you.

You are a tiny percentage of the market, and not worth the effort.

Now go back to your basement, and play with your kernels.

Can Oz compete in the outsourcing market?

Combat Wombat

Thus proving my point

Outsourcing is about driving down wages for skilled workers.

Infrastructure is cheap, labor is the biggest cost.

Companies will outsource to the lowest paid worker where ever possible

Combat Wombat
Badgers

You answered it on the first page...

"On the downside, Oz also has some eyewatering labour costs."

So Oz will never be an outsourcing center, because wages (read costs) can only go up from there.

Out sourcers want the cheapest labor, as that is the main component of their costs.

Given that the Aussie dollar is on par with Canada and the US, there is no real cost saving for companies.

The only time we will see outsourcing will leave India, is when the Indian currency gets anywhere close to parity to the country outsourcing.

With net unplugged, Egypt cracks down on journos

Combat Wombat

The revolution...

will not be televised... because the bastards cut off your access.

Now who things the current US scheme for an "internet kill switch: Is a good thing ? Hmmm ? anyone ? Buller ? Anyone?

What happened in Egypt is a clear picture of what can happen. The government gives the order, routers get updated, and AS systems drop off.

This is why there needs to be a open market, with lots of competition. Not the same top 3 or 4 companies running things.

Go Egypt ! Give the bastards hell :D

Are disk drives beginning to spin down?

Combat Wombat
Badgers

Hmmm no

Or it could be that people are buying less units.

I bought 4Tb of storage a year ago, and I won't be updating or upgrading any time soon.

It could be that we have hit the size plateau, where most people have enough space for what they need.

I won't be moving anything to the cloud, I like my data where I can control it.

What you will also see is the new push for data caps on internet links, killing off a lot of the cloud hype... especially for home users.

There is almost no reason to use local retailers, as they gouge the hell out of you with no real benefit. With anything tech related, even the warranty is a RTM (return to manufacturer) so you may as well buy it from the source, and cut out the useless middleman.

Australian retailers need to get over the delusion that they matter to the market at all. They are a tiny market, at the arse end of nowhere, so will get treated accordingly.

Hollywood claims Aussie ISP promoted BitTorrent use

Combat Wombat
Badgers

I for one..

still applaud the stance that iinet has taken against these bastards.

The argument they put forward (which was vindicated by the judge) was that determining whether copyright was actually being infringed, was not up to an ISP.

ISP's do not have the ability to determine this (legally or in practical terms), and it is up to the copyright holders to chase down people on an individual basis.

This is exactly what the media companies DON'T want to do. They want the ISP's to take all the risk, and do all the work for them.

Proprietary software puts pacemaker users at risk

Combat Wombat
Badgers

because...

A surprising number of heath professionals also code, and work on open source projects such as OSCAR (google it)

Because you can't trust that the device manufacturer hasn't skimped on QA, and is working on the famous formula that the car industry uses, as explained in Fight Club

Take the probable rate of failure A

Times it by the number of devices in the field B

Times it by the average cost of a legal cost of a settlement C

A x B X C = X

If X is less than the cost of a recall / extensive QA testing.. they won't do it.

Having intimate knowledge of the pacemaker hardware is a moot point when you are looking for memory overflows, buffer over runs and badly allocated values.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therac-25

You wouldn' t have needed to know the details to prevent this error.. and I am sure the same applies to pacemaker and implant stuff too.

UAE sees security threat in BlackBerrys

Combat Wombat

*sigh*

This is about the UAE not being able to read mail.

The security issue is that the UAE security services can't read peoples mail, and they are bitching about it.

Microsoft to banish 'responsible' from disclosure debate

Combat Wombat
Troll

What I am reading is...

Waaaah Waaah Waaaahh ! We want to keep doing security through obscurity, and only disclose stuff when we have to !

Damn all this hax0rs ! They are making us throw extra resources at solving problems in 30-60 days, rather than when ever we get around to it!

I am all for security experts disclosing issues, provided they have contacted the vendor first, and given them a reasonable time frame for a fix.

Let me clarify "reasonable"

If the explore is a remote exploit, that DOESN'T require the stupid monkey user to click on an infected link, then it should be 30 days to fix.

Remote exploit stupid link clicky longer, but engineer it so it zaps the user when they click stupid links

Things like the DNS re-direct issue that forced DNSSEC to be finally rolled out..well vendors need to suck it up, fix it ASAP, and then make their customers apply patches.

That's WHY we have IT admins, and patch cycles.

Of course companies like Cisco COULD fix their firmware update process, so an IOS update doesn't brick features... or the router.

So why are they NOT crowing?

So it is part of an ongoing investigation.

My money is that a fair bit of copyright related material was being hosted, and they are in the process of handing over the details to the *IAA goons as we speak.

It's more concerning that they are NOT saying which law enforcement group took it out.
