Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *tēl (wire, string; thong; strand).[1] Cognate with Karakhanid تِلیٖ (tili, thong), Crimean Tatar and Turkish tel, Turkmen til, Kumyk and Nogai тел (tel), Chuvash тал (tal, bundle). Alternatively, related to Armenian թել (tʻel, thread),[2][3] either as a direct borrowing or originating from the same Iranian source.

The sense 'telegram' is possibly a phono-semantic matching of Azerbaijani teleqram.
