The Tavern Song (Thai Mol Piyas) is a song from the North American version of the musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Unable to stop thinking about Esmeralda, Frollo finds himself wandering the streets night after night. One night, he comes across La Pomme d'Eve, a tavern frequented by Romani people, where he finds Esmeralda and Phoebus, who has come for a little fun, flirting with each other and eventually kissing. Although it horrifies him, Frollo can't bring himself to tear his eyes from the sight.
The La Jolla and Paper Mill Playhouse versions of this song feature different lyrics, and in the studio cast recording, the Paper Mill version is recorded.
Lyrics[]
Whispering voices:
Esmeralda...
Congregants:
Frollo began to walk the streets night after night, unable to bring himself to return alone to his cold, dark chambers.
Frollo:
He thought he saw her everywhere.
Clopin:
Ándo bírto zhas (Into the tavern we go)
Thai mol piyas (And wine we drink)
Congregant:
Until one night, walking down an unknown alley...
Clopin:
Amáre love das (Our money we give)
Thai mol piyas (And wine we drink)
Frollo:
...he heard the sound of distant music and laughter.
Romani:
Ándo bírto zhas
Thai mol piyas
Amáre love das
Thai mol piyas
Congregant:
...coming from within a tavern called...
Esmeralda and Romani:
La Pomme d'Eve!
Thai gilaba (And we sing)
Thai mol piyas!
In the dark of the night
In the dead of the winter
Men:
Pleasure is fleeting
Women:
Ándo bírto zhas
Men:
So lips will be meeting
Women:
Thai mol piyas
Romani:
Come keep me warm until morning!
Ándo bírto zhas
Thai mol piyas
Amáre love das
Thai mol piyas
Esmeralda:
With the taste of the wine
Hold me close while we're dancing
When I hear you sighing
Men:
Ándo bírto zhas
Esmeralda:
Winter is dying
Men:
Thai mol piyas
Esmeralda and Romani:
You'll keep me warm until morning
Romani:
In the dark of the night...
Frollo:
Brazen, lewd, and odious
This vile, depraved display...
Romani:
In the dead of the winter...
Frollo:
I cannot bear to watch
And yet I cannot turn away...
Romani:
You'll keep me warm until morning
In the dark of the night
In the dead of the winter
Men:
Pleasure is fleeting
Women:
Ándo bírto zhas
Men:
So lips will be meeting
Women:
Thai mol piyas
Romani:
Come keep me warm until morning!
Come keep me warm until morning!
Come keep me warm until morning!
Come keep me warm until morning!
