Mrs. Bowers is a character in the 2022 film Death on the Nile, directed by Kenneth Branagh and based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. She is portrayed by British comedian and actress Dawn French.

Background[]

Mrs. Bowers is the nurse and companion of Mrs. Marie Van Schuyler, a wealthy and snobbish American widow who travels to Egypt with her cousin Cornelia Robson. Mrs. Bowers accompanies Mrs. Van Schuyler on a Nile cruise aboard the steamer S.S. Karnak, where they encounter a group of diverse and eccentric passengers, including the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Mrs. Bowers has a personal grudge against Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle, a young and beautiful heiress who is also on board the S.S. Karnak with her husband Simon Doyle. Linnet's father, Melhuish Ridgeway, was a ruthless businessman who ruined Mrs. Bowers' family by driving them to bankruptcy. Mrs. Bowers openly expresses her hatred for Linnet and wishes her dead.

When Linnet is murdered in her cabin one night, Poirot begins to investigate the crime and interrogates all the passengers and crew members, including Mrs. Bowers. He discovers that Mrs. Bowers has an alibi for the time of the murder, as she was attending to Jacqueline de Bellefort, Linnet's former friend and Simon's ex-fiancée, who had shot herself in the leg after confronting the Doyles earlier that evening. Mrs. Bowers proves to be a reliable witness for Poirot, as she confirms Jacqueline's alibi and provides him with some clues and insights into the other suspects. She also helps Poirot prevent another murder attempt on Cornelia Robson, who is revealed to be the heiress of Mrs. Van Schuyler's fortune.

Mrs. Bowers is one of the few characters who survive the events of the film, as Poirot uncovers a complex and twisted plot involving multiple murders, betrayals, and conspiracies among the passengers. She remains loyal to Mrs. Van Schuyler until the end, despite their occasional bickering and disagreements. Mrs. Bowers is a minor but significant character in Death on the Nile, as she represents one of the possible motives for killing Linnet Doyle: revenge for past wrongs. She also adds some comic relief to the film with her sarcastic and witty remarks, as well as her contrast with Mrs. Van Schuyler's pompous and arrogant personality.
