Dr. Bessner is a character in the 2022 mystery film Death on the Nile based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie.

Background[]

A renowned physician from Austria who runs a large clinic in Vienna, he is portrayed by English actor Russell Brand. He is one of the passengers on board the Karnak, a luxury steamer sailing on the Nile River in Egypt. He is traveling with his friend and colleague, Dr. Ludwig Schäfer, a German archaeologist who is interested in ancient Egyptian medicine. Dr. Bessner becomes involved in the investigation of a series of murders that occur on the boat, led by the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (played by Branagh). He attends to Simon Doyle (played by Armie Hammer), who is shot in the leg by his ex-fiancée Jacqueline de Bellefort (played by Emma Mackey), and later reveals that the weapon used to kill Louise Bourget (played by Sophie Okonedo), a maid who witnessed one of the murders, was a surgical knife that belonged to him.

Dr. Bessner is briefly suspected by Poirot as a possible culprit, as he had a motive to kill Linnet Doyle (played by Gal Gadot), a wealthy heiress who was married to Simon and who had ruined his clinic by withdrawing her financial support. However, Poirot soon clears him of any involvement and reveals that the real murderers were Simon and Jacqueline, who had plotted to kill Linnet and frame her former friend Jacqueline for it. Dr. Bessner also develops a romantic interest in Cornelia Robson (played by Letitia Wright), a young American woman who is traveling with her wealthy aunt Marie Van Schuyler (played by Annette Bening). He admires Cornelia's intelligence and kindness and proposes to her at the end of the film. She accepts his offer, as she sees him as a reliable and supportive partner who shares her interests and values.

Personality[]

Dr. Bessner is a character who represents the rational and scientific side of human nature, in contrast to the passionate and jealous side that drives the main villains. He is also a compassionate and generous man, who offers his medical expertise to help others and who respects Cornelia's independence and aspirations. He is one of the few characters who survive the ordeal on the Karnak and who find happiness in love.
