Omarcitos
A former employee at Big & Littles decided to open up his own sandwich shop, leaning into Latin American flavors. He created Omarcitos, a cafe that redefines counter service. Grab a cafe con leche and enjoy El Fulanito. This sandwich, on French bread, uses the same delicious marinated steak found on other sandwiches but adds a scallion and cheese omelet, plus white onions, tomato, and green-garlic sauce.
Loaf Lounge
This bread-centric cafe from wife-and-husband team Sarah Mispagel and Ben Lustbader became a near-instant hit when it launched in August 2022. The glow of small-screen stardom helps — Mispagel, a baker, was a consultant for Hulu hit The Bear and created the show’s now-famous chocolate cake. But the real magic comes with biting into the cafe’s egg sandwiches, available with sausage, capicola (“gabagool” to Tony Soprano), or braised kale.

Paulie Gee's
Owner Derrick Tung is in hot pursuit of the morning crowd at both his locations of Paulie Gee’s (Wicker Park and the original in Logan Square). In Logan Square, he recently kicked off brunch, and they’ve got Detroit-style breakfast pizza that will clean up any sluggishness you might have acquired from the night before. The darling of the weekend brunch menu might be the sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. The SEC is served with chipotle aioli, but the bun, a light and fluffy entry, is really the star. It captures also the wonderful care the staff puts into its pizzas, offering it as an a.m. option.

Nellie's
Nellie’s is one of the most welcoming restaurants in Chicago, a Puerto Rican restaurant popular for its breakfast buffet and full espresso bar. Chicago is allegedly the inventor of the jibarito, the Puerto Rican sandwich made with fried plantains instead of bread, giving folks avoiding carbs and gluten a special treat. That was irrelevant to the creation of the dish. It’s delicious. At Nellie’s, they offer a ham version with garlic goodness topped with eggs for the morning crowd.

L&M Fine Foods
Biscuit sandwiches are the name of the game at L&M Fine Foods, a bougie gourmet store and deli on the North Side. This specialty grocer has a truly unique stock of products, and the deli carries the same philosophy. Go to Subway or Jimmy John’s if you need a meal deal. The breakfast sandwiches come with bacon or sausage made on premises. Don’t want a biscuit? Bagels are also available.

Gangnam Market
Gangnam Market is a supermarket that stocks American, Pan Asian, and Mexican goods under one roof. It might not have the same specialty items one would find at an Asian grocer on Argyle, but it’s a boon to West Town. Cafecito
This Cuban mini-chain, with locations in Loop, South Loop, Gold Coast, and Lincoln Park, offers pressed sandwiches in the traditions of Miami and Tampa — the two Florida cities that bicker about who has the best Cuban sandwich. Chicago is obviously above all Neanderthal civic discourse (pizza, ketchup), but regardless, egg sandwich lovers should zero in on Cafecito’s Chivito. It’s a pressed sandwich with steak, bacon, and ham with a fried egg, mozzarella, plus lettuce, tomato, and onion. Plus, there’s citrus mayo. This one will stick with you.
Doma Cafe
“Doma” is the Croatian word for home, and that’s the feeling the owners of this Near North Side cafe (nested between what was Cabrini-Green and Gold Coast) want to capture.
