|As Denver Auditor for most of the past eight years, my role has two main components to it. First, I audit government agencies, offices, and programs, to ensure that taxpayer money is being spent in a cost-conscious and effective manner and that programs are being implemented according to their enacted goals.
Second, our office enforces wage and hour laws. In the course of this important work, we have relied upon and collaborated with labor unions. They are important for protecting workers' interests and ensuring Denver's labor laws are followed, and they are tremendous sources of information about potential legal violations.
I have over 40 years of auditing and accounting experience. I held the top auditing job – the State Auditor -- in Colorado State government for 11 years. I am past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA), a position he also held on the Board of the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA). He has been president of the Colorado Society of CPAs, a Governing Council Member of the American Institute of CPAs, and is currently on the Executive Committee of the Mountain and Plains Intergovernmental Audit Forum. I have a long history of civic participation has involved leadership positions with the American Humane Society, Caring for Colorado, 9News Health Fair, and the Lions Club.
