Three seats on the Southside Independent School District board of trustees in Texas were up for general election on May 6, 2017. In the race for Position 3, newcomer Ruth Arocha defeated incumbent Norbert Chavez III and candidate Sonny Santos. The Position 5 incumbent chose not to seek re-election. Anita Reyna defeated fellow newcomer Bruce Brannon to win the open seat. According to the San Antonio Express-News, the race for Position 4 was won by newcomer Benito Flores by a margin of nine votes over fellow candidate Maggie Morales. Flores defeated Morales, incumbent Loren Brewer, and newcomer Daniel "Buddy" Vallejo to win the seat. Because of the narrow vote margin, the unofficial vote totals may change during the canvassing process. Ballotpedia will continue to monitor the story for information updates.[1][2]
In addition to choosing school board members, voters approved a $59.75 million bond issue proposition. Of the total ballots cast, 545 (53 percent) were in favor of the proposition while 472 were against the proposition.[1]
