Candidate Connection

Kimberly Grant completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Grant's responses.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Lowering property taxes, doing away with frivolous spending, working to decrease our homeless population and being a voice for the people in my district

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I have several female friends that have proven to be strong leaders in their field, but ultimately I look to God for guidance.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Communication is key. Our citizens want to know that they have a voice and I will not only be that voice for the people, but I stand up for them every single time. It's very important that we have transparency and accountability for the office we serve. I will do every thing in my power to make sure my constituents know where their money is being spent. I will ensure that there are no more backdoor meetings. I will do everything in my power to ensure that our city council is actually working for the people again instead of working for their own agendas. I will be a voice for my constituents.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I have many years of experience in management, as well as a background in business and finance. I've raised my family, bought a home and paid my taxes. I know the everyday struggles of my constituents. I am a natural problem solver and very detail oriented. I also have more than 25 years of experience with and for the people in my volunteer and humanitarian work. I have always been a voice for people and I will continue to be a voice for my constituents.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

One of the main things one in my position needs to have is communication skills. You have to know the people, be able to communicate well with them in order to be a voice for them. It's imperative that one would have real life experience. Be able to manage tasks, meet deadlines and be very detail oriented. I feel that my background in business and finance will be a great asset to me as I work through the budget with our citizens hard earned tax dollars. I strongly feel that someone in my position really needs to love what they are doing, care about the people in their district and possess true values and morals.

What legacy would you like to leave?

Legacy... Just to be someone that represented the people in my district and worked for the whole of San Antonio. One that made a difference because they truly cared about the people. I'm not looking for fame or fortune. I'm just looking to make a difference in people's lives.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The challenger explosion... I was 14, in the 9th grade. Sitting in accounting class watching the shuttle take off with the first ever teacher on board. Just the thought of it still makes my heart beat fast and I have to remind myself to breathe. It was such a tragedy and a day I will never forget.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was 16 and I worked at Tom Thumb as a manager. I started out as a package clerk, within a few months I was moved up to cashier and then a few months later I was moved up to a management position. I have always been a hard working fast learner. I have always climbed the ladder very quickly because of my hard work, dedication and attention to detail. I was at Tom Thumb for a couple of years before I sought a better paying position at a bank.

What happened on your most awkward date?

When I spent 2 hours getting ready for a nice casual evening out when the guy shows up on a motorcycle to pick me up. Since I had mention that I had never ridden on a bike and wasn't too sure that I wanted to, he thought he'd give me my first bike ride. The hair I'd spent 2 hours fixing to get it just right, quickly became helmet hair. It was also the last time I rode a bike.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas. Definitely Christmas. I love the spirit of the holiday. The celebration of the birth of Jesus. The feeling in the air, the lights, the sounds, the smells. I love to give and to help others. Christmas is about giving and celebrating life.

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Shack by Wm Paul Young. The book is about a horrific tragedy and healing from through the power of God. Knowing that wherever you are in your life, in your grief that God is with you. It also reaffirmed to me that regardless of where we are in life and whatever trials and tribulations we face on a daily basis that he is with us.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

I don't know... I like who I am.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

Definitely my bed! It's big, it's beautiful, it's so comfy and there's nothing better than curling up with a good book.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Do Something by Matthew West. This is without a doubt, one of my favorite songs. It breaks my heart to see people struggling, living on the streets, living in poverty. Everyone has a purpose in life. It's up to us to make a difference. We have to work together to make a better life for all.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

When I was in my mid 20's I struggled with a very debilitating physical condition. Not being able to run and play with my young children, at the time, was heartbreaking. I was very career focused and this was like slamming into a brick wall, going 90 to nothing. To get through this I had to find the positive in all that I was dealing with and I did. My faith in God brought me out of me depression, stemming from my condition, and it also taught me that God may have different plans for us than we had planned, but he will get us through it.

Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?

I just want people to understand that there is a process for everything. I will represent one district with San Antonio and I will be working with others who represent their district. It's got to be a joint effort to get anything accomplished. I have always been a strong leader and I will fight for the people of my district.

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

Communication, management, business and finance, detail oriented and more importantly someone that not only loves the people and knows the people, but someone who is going to work for the people and be their voice.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?

To be able to work with the people and for the people. To be able to be hands-on and involved in the community of this magnitude will be amazing. To have hand in making a difference in someone else's life is the ultimate reward.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

Of course it'd be beneficial, but it's more important to truly know the people you are serving and for them know that their voices will not go unheard. If you can't be a voice for the constituents in your district then you have no place in office, regardless of your pollical experience.
