|Kim Shelton grew up in the nation's capital in public housing. A product of the DC Public School system, Kim got her first job while in High School through Mayor Barry's summer youth program as a math and reading tutor. She graduated with honors from Eastern High School in 1986. Kim's parents always taught their children to have a heart for helping others which led her to a career in nursing. Kim served as a nursing assistant for 17 years then transitioned into the transportation industry.
Through her years of working, Kim saw the plight of the homeless and decided to take up that cause. She began to purchase and collect blankets, toiletries, and other items to give to those she saw had need. Kim's effort with the homeless morphed into an organization she calls PopUp Meals for The Homeless. This project is "her baby" which she funds and runs independently in Washington, DC and has the vision to do this same program in both Anne Arundel and Prince Georges counties.
As a result of her work in the community for the last 30 years and seeing some of the same kinds of things since she has become a Maryland resident, Kim believes that the best way to effectuate change is through political action.
- Improving education, making it equal for all
- Curtailing gun violence
