Fitzgerald Washington was the Alabama Commissioner of Labor. Washington assumed office in 2014. Washington left office on September 27, 2024.
Gov. Robert Bentley (R) appointed Washington as the Alabama Commissioner of Labor. He was appointed to the position on August 4, 2014.[1] Washington retired on September 27, 2024.[2]
In his capacity as commissioner, Washington is authorized to lead the Department of Labor in resolving labor disputes, enforcing state labor laws, promoting cooperation between labor and business leaders and coordinating with federal officials from the U.S. Department of Labor, among other responsibilities. In Alabama, the commissioner serves at the pleasure of the sitting governor and is not subject to any specific term limits.[3]
Biography
Washington worked for 15 years as a marketing and sales director for The Buffalo Rock Company. He served as the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama in 2013.[1]

Alabama Labor Commissioner (2014 - 2024)
Washington was appointed to replace outgoing commissioner Tom Surtees on August 4, 2014.[1] Surtees had served in the position since a 2012 merger of the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations and the Department of Labor.[1][4]
