- This article is about the character in Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender. For the character from the animated series, see Sozin.
Sozin was the ruler of the Fire Nation who instigated the invasion and subsequent genocide of the Air Nomads, leading to the century-long war that followed. Succeeded by his son, Fire Lord Azulon, he was the grandfather of Iroh and Fire Lord Ozai, and great-grandfather of Lu Ten, Zuko, and Azula.
History[]
At some point, Fire Lord Sozin became aware of an Earth Kingdom spy in the Fire Nation capital and allowed false plans for an invasion of the Earth Kingdom to be stolen from the capital and delivered to the Earth King. When the spy was brought before him, Sozin revealed to the earthbender the ruse, intended to divert the attention of the world away from the Air Nomads as their true target, before burning the spy alive where he stood. Pressed by his War Minister on whether the airbenders were truly a threat, Sozin stated that as the Avatar was the only one that could stand in their way, and whose identity had yet to be revealed, it would be necessary to kill them all.
Sozin subsequently lead his army in an all-out assault on the Southern Air Temple, their firebending abilities amplified by the comet that passed overhead. Walking through the temple grounds during the assault, he remorselessly burned alive several airbenders, before confronting Monk Gyatso as the latter attempted to protect a group of young Air Nomads. Sozin was able to overwhelm the airbender with his amplified firebending, consuming Monk Gyatso in fire and burning him alive. Though the assault on the temple was ultimately a success, Sozin failed to kill his true target, Avatar Aang, who had fled the temple before the invasion had taken place.[1]
Legacy[]
Upon his death, Sozin was succeeded as Fire Lord by his son, Azulon, who would continue the war started by his father. The comet that he had used to kill the Air Nomads would come to be known as "Sozin's Comet".[2]
Personality[]
Sozin was ruthless in pursuit of his aim to conquer the world and unite it under Fire Nation rule. He took pleasure in killing others and would eliminate anyone that stood in his way, having no qualms in eradicating the entire Air Nomad nation. Sozin's ruthless and bloodthirsty nature would be continued by his successors as Fire Lord, with Ozai considering it his destiny to finish the century-long war started by his grandfather.[3]
