Overview[]

An airbender comes to grips with his new reality as war erupts. A century later, a pair of Water Tribe siblings make a discovery that changes everything.

Synopsis[]

As Sozin's Comet approaches Earth, an undercover earthbender attepmts to escape with secret Fire Nation army plans in Capital City. Chased by guards, the spy puts up a fight, eventually giving the plans he stole to a fellow Earth Kingdom soldier. He tells his comrade to give the plans to the Earth King, warning that the Fire Nation intends to start a war. After a battle, the man is eventually captured and brought to Fire Lord Sozin, who reveals that getting those plans to the Earth King was his plan all along. Sozin explains that the Earth King would send forces to his borders and rally the support of the other nations, turning everyone's attention to the earthbenders while he would attack the Air Nomads. When asked why he would do such a thing, Sozin says that it is their time, killing the spy and telling his generals that the Avatar, now among the airbenders, is the only one who could stand in their way. He explains that, since the Avatar has not yet been revealed, it is necessary to kill them all.

At the Southern Air Temple, Aang flies down from a tower, surprising other airbenders. Approaching Gyatso, the young monk's master tells him he skipped training, reminding him he still has much to learn. Gyatso tells Aang to get ready for the Great Comet Festival as airbenders from the other temples reach them. Once Aang leaves, a monk asks Gyatso if he had told Aang he is the Avatar, to which Gyatso responds that he had not.

Speaking to the council, Gyatso tells the other monks that Aang had always been a prodigy, having been the youngest airbender in history to receive the markings of a master, but reminds them all that the Avatar is only 12, mentioning he still has a lot to learn and stating that Aang could fail if he did not complete his learnings. The High Monk tells Gyatso that he has become too attached to Aang, ordering for the young Avatar to leave immediately to train in the other disciplines.

Aang complains to Gyatso about the amount of work they had put in for the Great Comet Festival as they walk into a ceremonial room, asking if that was common. Gyatso jokes with Aang, telling him that he had not been alive to see the last one since it had occurred 100 years prior to then. The young airbender's master tells him that while most monks receive their master's markings in another hall, he had wanted for him to receive his in the presence of Avatar Yangchen, revealing that Aang is the Avatar. Aang is surprised to hear this news, but Gyatso tells him he is the only one who can save them from the soon to come attack from the Fire Nation against the world. The young monk mentions that he does not want all that power, wondering why he has to be different and asking his master if they can just keep pretending they are friends. Gyatso reminds the young Avatar that they will always be friends and the two hug.

Having trouble sleeping that night, Aang is approached by his sky bison Appa. Aang tells him that he has no idea how he is supposed to save the world, saying he cannot stop the Fire Nation or a war and wishing he could trade places with anyone. Appa helps his friend calm down and the two set off after Aang says he needs to fly for a bit to gather his thoughts. Flying away, the weather starts to get rough, so Aang tells his sky bison to head back. However, they are unable to do so as a big wave slams into them, knocking them out of the sky and into the water. Unconscious, Aang enters the Avatar State and forms a huge iceberg which encases both him and Appa, freezing them.

As the Fire Nation prepares to attack the Southern Air Temple, Fire Lord Sozin orders his soldiers to leave no survivors. Firebenders begin to attack the airbenders, who are caught off guard by the attack. Gyatso helps to care for the children, soon realizing Aang is nowhere to be seen. The fight continues, as the airbenders are overwhelmed by the power the firebenders have thanks to the comet. Sozin soon approaches Gyatso and the children's hiding place with a group of soldiers. An intense battle ensues with Gyatso able to defeat all the soldiers except for Sozin, who is able to defeat him.
