Dr. Pitelka’s Japanese History Lab recently had the wonderful opportunity to examine and study a late Edo-period handscroll in the collection of the Ackland Art Museum in the winter of late 2023 and early 2024. Per Dr. Pitelka:

The scroll is a beautiful work depicting crowds of Edo residents walking along the Sumida river on their way to look at cherry blossoms. We worked with the Ackland to produce a video of the scroll and our research on it.

The video’s main narrator is Jack Snyder, class of 2026, a double major in History and Japanese. Sylvie Hack, a recent (spring 2024) alum from our graduate program, is also featured in the video.
