Why Arabic?

Arabic is the native language of over 300 million people around the world, an official language in 24 countries, and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is also the religious language of more than one billion Muslims. The geopolitical, cultural, and economic importance of the Middle East & North Africa to the world necessitates increasing engagement and professional competency in Arabic languages and cultures. By studying Arabic at UNC, majoring in the Arab cultures track, or minoring in Arabic, students at UNC gain a number of important skills. They will acquire skills to effectively communicate in Arabic using both spoken and written forms of the language. Interdisciplinary study about the Arab world, the Middle East, and the Muslim world will build students’ cultural competence and facilitate their interactions with the diverse populations in the Arab world

Career opportunities for Arabic language and culture students

The demand for multilingual personnel extends to all fields. Students of Arabic and Arab cultures use their skills in the arts, business, education, healthcare, law, media and communications,  politics and diplomacy, refugee resettlement, and science and engineering.
