[Closed] Video on Flickr -- Bugs

Update: We made some changes to how video is processed, and would like to direct further posts over to the newest topic here.

Thanks!

_____
If you're having issues with video on Flickr, this Help Topic's for you (if you've got feedback, please head over to this topic).

The video FAQs are a great place to start for more info.

Known issues:

-- There are some files from some cameras that Flickr has a hard time processing. We encourage these members to use free Moviemaker (PC) or iMovie (Mac) to export files that Flickr can support. We’re working on supporting everyone’s files!

-- You can't replace or rotate videos right now. You’ll need to re-upload a video in order to replace it. We’re working on both of these features soon.

-- Editing. We don’t currently provide editing tools. We encourage these members to use free Moviemaker (PC) or iMovie (Mac) for basic editing, or to cut a video down to 90 seconds.

28 July 08- We identified and resolved some problems that was specific to our video upload setup in Europe and caused many video uploads from there to fail.

19 July 08- Still tracking some residual problem reports on video files hanging.

16 July 08- We fixed a problem that was causing some large file sizes (both photo and video) to hang on upload.

7/8/08 10:20 AM Pacific -- We're aware that some of you are currently experiencing issues with uploading video. We'll provide updates in this topic as the issue(s) are resolved. Thanks for your patience.

Since, then, I get that message. I am not in violation of any of the rules - content is safe, it is a jpg, the group allows 5 posts per day and I have only posted one today. I am member of this group and don't need an invite.

1. Default privacy setting was View by me only.

Yeah-- we're aware of this problem and are working on it. A workaround is to place some non-black frames at the very end of your video (a credits screen, for example).

I noticed when I use the new uploader that it stalls out at 99%.

It doesn't seem to matter though, the video makes it up. Reverting to the basic uploader seems to work better. (Though I've also noticed the issue with one of my videos coming in as private even though that's not my default setting. But better that than coming in public when I want it private.)

Videos play great (so much better than Google or YouTube for the exact same videos I've placed there).

Ok, tried again with mine and it went this time, but there is definitely something a bit off with the privacy settings. I used the basic upload page, and selected "public" as the setting. I then went to get some ice cream while I waited, forgot what I was doing and ended up in the shower (what? like that never happens to you?), and when I came back my video was up, but set to "private", but had been viewed 12 times and had a comment. Odd.

I'm wondering whether there's any chance that at some point the "date taken" will be automatically set, when the video includes such information. I realize many video formats don't... videos made with my old Olympus lack it... but the videos I'm doing now with the Canon S3 do include a "date taken" timestamp. Editing it manually for each video is a bit of a pain.

GustavoG I'm using a crappy point and shoot for video, and the date taken field on Flickr does match the date they came off the camera.

However, the files I moved from another system to this one for uploading were all stamped with the date taken as the date of the file move. So, it seems to me to be pulling from the file date creation, but I could be mistaken.

I don't care about uploading my own videos yet. I just want my browser not to crash when I try to look at OTHER'S videos. Several contacts put them up tonight, and clicking on them in EITHER Firefox or Safari caused it to shut down immediately.

It's the same thing that happens when I click "Upload Photos" (luckily I do that through Uploadr now). (Or try to upload photos on MySpace, which I'd successfully done for months.) All this happened after I unsuccessfully tried to install and use Picnik (I don't know how to edit my photos at all now). So maybe it's more of a problem with that, but I wondered is anyone else completely unable to view videos?

Hmm, I forgot I'm re-encoding the huge .avi files to .mpg before uploading them, and they lose the internal timestamp. Guess I'll have to keep editing timestamps manually, unless flickr learns to parse filenames. :)

It is because now all groups now have the NEW rules listed.

gliff says:

This is format related, but hopefully a useful data point none-the-less. Fixes are recommended with the standard "I have been in no way involved in this project, and have no clue as to the issues you're facing, priorities, or external limitations"

Platform: OS X
Browser: Firefox

Issue One
----------------

I have a number of videos that I shot on my Treo 650, which i **believe** shoots 3GP video files. However, when I sync my 650 and my computer, the files are saved with a .3g2 file extension (not .3gp). When I attempted to upload this file through a web browser on my MacBook, running OS X, I was not able to select any file with a .3g2 extension. It was greyed out as un-selectable.

Expected Behavior: Can Select files with .3g2 extensions from file dialog
Actual Behavior: Files with .3g2 extensions are greyed out in file dialog.
Suspected Reason: .3g2 is not recognized as a valid 3GP file extension.
Recommended Fix: Add .3g2 as a recognized file extension, since that's what the Treo 650 uses to save its videos

Related Issue: You can't add files with a .3g2 extension to Flickr Uploader.

Expected Behavior: Can upload a valid video file with a .3g2 extension through Flickr Uploader
Actual Behavior: .3g2 files are rejected as "invalid file type" when attempting to add to Flickr Uploader
Suspected Reason: Flickr Uploader is keying off file extension, rather than Mac OS X file metadata.
Recommended Fix: Key off File type rather than file extension

Issue Two
----------------

I then renamed the file to have a .avi extension to see if I could "trick" the file dialog into letting me select the file. It worked! I was able to upload my video file. When the video was finished processing I was able to view it in my photostream. However, there was no sound.

Expected Behavior: .3gp video file has sound after upload
Actual Behavior: .3gp video file has NO sound after upload
Suspected Reason: The file was converted as though it were an avi file.
Recommended Fix: Don't key off file extension when converting video, key off file type (I know, only a long-time Mac user would say something like this)

Not an Issue Three
----------------
I finally looked at the FAQ, where I read you supported "3GP" video files. Suspecting my "3G2" files were really "3GP" files, I changed the extension to 3GP. Low and behold, I was able to select this video from the file browser, upload it, and hear the sound when it finished uploading and processing.

I know, I know, annoying little details. You did, however, ask. :)

Not so much as a complaint, but 90 seconds is way too short, best described as brief.

Yet there may need to be a limit of sorts, but open up a bit. Three minutes would be reasonable.

A majority of my videos, for example, some 250 of them, were done several years ago. All my own work, not an issue there, but none the less, would not go back and redit them just for a 90 sec promo view.

Problems with blog templates

1. There appears to be no way to control the "originally uploaded by..." section of the blog template. Perhaps video should have its own blog template customizations?

2. I can't choose a size that is different from my photos. I prefer to have my photos as thumbs, but I'd like to embed my videos at full size. Sure I can do that manually, but the blog button would be a little more useful.

Bug: I just loaded the Organizer and set it to sort by video only, and it returned all my images in the Findr, overlaying the play button on top of the photos.

When I drag a photo into the main window from the Findr bar, despite that it has a playback button on it in the Findr, it does display correctly in the main window as a photo.

As it turns out, my phone sends .3g2 files, which are viewable by default in Quicktime, but flickr won't read them.

Phone > Bluetooth to Macbook > media-convert.com > upload to flickr

Sort of sucks and could just be:

Phone > upload to flickr

If you guys would support the format....?

It seems that by default videos start downloading as soon as you land on a photo page. That's ok for me, but I imagine it will cause problems for people who don't have unlimited bandwidth, and who haven't figured out how to set their account up so that it doesn't start downloading automatically. (And that's not so obvious.)

Especially since there seems to be no way of stopping the download other than moving to another page (and hoping that doesn't have a video on it), I'm inclined to think that the default ought to be that you need to request the download to start.

I suspect that this would save a considerable amount of strain on the Yahoo servers, too, where people who are just browsing or owners who are adjust tags etc will also start large downloads going as they flip from page to page.

Just an idea.

Actually, I just realised that the setting I talked about is only related to autoplay, and not to whether the download starts automatically or not. Which I guess means that I'm more concerned about this now.

And having played with the settings a little, I now realise that setting autoplay to yes or no seems to make no difference to me.

Flickr seems to not like videos with weird frame rates-- I uploaded one that should play at 8fps, but instead it just played very quickly. (Worked around by tripling up on frames to make it 24fps here). I've uploaded the original 8fps version here if anyone is interested in seeing why that might be.

Also, even though my default upload settings are 'public', and it says so on the basic uploader page (the new fancy one stopped working for me at some point), if I upload a video it appears to revert to 'private'. Remnant from the private beta?

More: I have auto-play set to 'yes', yet I've always had to click the play button to get the movies going. (Safari 3 on OSX 10.5). Edit: Scratch that. Dunno what changed but that works now. (I assume that my own videos aren't supposed to autoplay, cause they don't.)

Lastly-- is there a way to get at the original videos?

I have a movie I want to upload. It was shot in a vertical format and I turned it around in Quicktime for viewing. I uploaded it this way but when it posted on my flickr site it was sideways. Suppose it cannot be loaded if it was taken vertically instead of horizonally???

If you want to see correct color, you can check the same video on youtube.

Cathy Higgins: probably this is because like in photos, those rotations are done on-display, not by actually saving the frames in their rotated form. It's just a property in the qt file telling the player to rotate the movie as it plays it. It appears flickr does not (yet) support those.

I'm assuming my framerate issue is essentially the same problem, actually.

Cathy: I read at the top of this thread that Flickr will support rotation in the future.

Marco Wessel Lastly-- is there a way to get at the original videos?

Yes, go to the embed link above the video on its page, and you'll find a download link for the original file.

Also, the frame rate of conversion is 30 fps, if that helps you any.

Cathy Higgins striatic has been able to post vertical videos. If you rotated in QTP, that should have worked. Can you play back the file on your system in the correct orientation?
