Belgian d' Anver

The history of the d' Anver Belgian Bearded D' Anver Various miniature fowl are known to...
Best little bantams!
Pros: Tiny bearded cuties
Gentle hens
Easy to keep
Easy to show
Roosters are full of confidence but not mean
Do well in confinement
Cons: Hard to find good stock
Hard to find many of the color varieties
Small enough you can have a lot of them!
I have almost 20 d’Anvers and have yet to have a single mean bird. They’re all sweet, gentle, easy to handle birds that I don’t worry about around my kids ever. I highly recommend getting chicks or hatching eggs from breeders that spend the time on temperament as part of their program. So far mine have been easy going, sweet, hardy little birds that have been fun to take to shows and 4-H projects!

I've searched everywhere for BB d-anvers and can't find them. Can you tell me where you first got yours? Or perhaps anyone that may sell Belgium Bearded d'anver chicks or eggs? I had a flock for over 20 years. I've had all kinds of chickens, dozens of breeds but hands down, these are my favorite. Personable, sweet-natured, easy to tame, hardy, pretty to look at and that little muff! How can anyone resist them? I'm ready to get back into the chicken-keeping business again and I want to do it with the breed I love best. Now if only I can find someone that has BB d-anver chicks or eggs to sell. Thanks for any help.

You bet! I joined the BB d’Anver Club and there are also public and private Facebook pages for the club and have gotten eggs from folks on there! I also got super lucky and found hatching eggs of show quality on eBay that were fairly close by (Fresno to Sacramento). I would be happy to help you!

I got mine at TS. I love them!
Pros: Adorable, easy to breed, bright friendly personalities, loads of gorgeous colors, hardy, low maintenance... best little bantam out there!
Cons: Roosters are aggressive, sneaky buggers like roosting in the rafters and hiding nests (with the occasional broody)
D'Anvers are definitely my favorite breed of chicken! Most low maintenance, best personality, in my opinion they are also the cutest! The only cons I see are that the roosters can be mean, which is ok because of their size, but some people don't like that.
CrazyCochin
Yes, we have a rooster, and he is NASTY!
But I would like to breed him to our bantam cochin!
Pros: Crow is very low and quiet
Small and Cute
Cons: Hyperactive
Roosters are not mean but are not friendly either
Roosters do not like to be held, I'm assuming hens are more easily handled, though I do not have one (ISO-Lavender). The crow is so funny, like he is saying uh oh! So quiet that you wouldn't know he was there except for a little clucking every now and then. He does like to run around a lot. Very active.

Have 1 Pullet and she's mean.
Must be the breed.
The Belgian Bearded d'Anver is a small breed which makes it a good show bird for young children! They are beautiful and extremely docile!
Pros: very curious, hens are very friendly, lay well for their size, tolerate handling well, come when called
Cons: roosters can be mildly agressive.
I have been keeping this breed for about 3 years and I love them! I can't believe they're not more popular. The hens are absolutely perfect pets. Very talkative and friendly, the roosters can be a little aggressive but they're so small, it's more annoying than anything. Despite their small size the hens lay about 4-6 eggs a week. This is a very hardy breed and great for children! 10/10 recommend.
Pros: Small and easy to take care of, Great free-rangers, Sweet Personality, Beautiful
Cons: Noisy
I've had these birds for about five years now, and they are my absolute favorites, right next to the d'Uccles. I am going to be breeding several variations of this breed this year. I've owned the Quail Antwerp variation for five years, and they are typically very sweet. The hen I have right now isn't too fond of human contact, but she isn't nippy or aggressive. She is an amazing free ranger, and we've even seen her hunting down grasshoppers, so she doesn't consume a lot of feed. She can be a little noisy, but that doesn't both me too much.

You gotta GET this breed!
Pros: Protective, pretty to look at, sweet
Cons: LOUD!!!
Got a quail Rooster who is sweet as can be and very attentive to my girls. He's a huge pretty boy but the only downside I can think of is that he is LOUD!

Obnoxiously so.

That being said, I plan on keeping him around for a long time because he is just that great with the flock. Our Barred Rocks give him no respect though and will peck at him since he's just a young cockerel. I'm sure once he becomes a full-grown bird they'll change their tune though!

Pros: Sweet, Smart, Tame
Cons: LOUD Crow
I've had my babies since July 2013 and I wanted to review them right away but made myself wait til they got older and personalities had really developed. They are now 6 months old and I am just as happy today with them as I was the day they arrived from the hatchery. They are super healthy, easy to care for and very smart. I read all the information I could find before buying them and saw that the Roosters could be a bit aggressive. So I started out early with treats and trying to get the flock used to attention, being held and being around people in general. Out of 12 Roosters, I am proud to say that only 2 of them just aren't friendly at all. The others are dominant and watchful over the hens but they know I come in and handle their girls and might try to scold me once in a while but there's no flogging. The most dominant one see's me come in the coop and comes and dances at my feet and stays really close but he does it mostly in the hopes of being picked up before the girls are. I've noticed that if I reach for a hen first he will scold me by pecking my hand. If I pick him up first and give him a little scratch behind his head he is fine with the girls being picked up after that.

The hens are all for the most part very tame and sweet. Some will run to be picked up and if not picked up as fast as they want will fly up on the person who's attention they want. A few of the hens though are perfectly happy to be left alone. They're not aggressive if they have to be handled and they will eat treats out of my hand every chance they get, but they just aren't into the whole neck scratches and loves that the others are. Which is fine by me. I'm surprised that I have ANY chickens who actually like attention so I'll take what I can get!

My girls aren't laying yet. I'm expecting the first egg anytime though and can't wait to be hatching some new babies this Spring. They are literally the cutest chicks i've ever seen and they are so much fun to watch.

I have other breeds. specifically Silver Duckwings, BB Reds, Silver Sebrights and a few Production Reds and while they are interesting to watch and pretty to look at, NONE of them are as impressive as my D'Anvers. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a pretty, well rounded bird.

Pros: tiny, smart, hens are GREAT PETS, adorable, lil eggs
Cons: had 1 agressive roo,
We only have one hen quail d'Anvers, but she has more personality then almost any other chicken in the flock. She sneaks her way into the house to forage the kitchen floor for scraps. She is best buddies with my 2 year old who hugs her without any fuss, she loves to be held, doesnt run, and will perch happily on my finger. I once had an aggressive male quail D'Anvers. males of other colors tend not to be as aggressive.
This truly is a special breed.

Pros: Loads of character, pretty, friendly
Cons: Feisty, likes to go broody, bad layers
D'Anvers are lovely little creatures. They are especially funny when they are broody. They do not lay well, but are bred for looks, and come in many varieties, including the most popular, quail, and others like Millie Fleur and Black. They are small, so make sure they can reach the water dish.

Pros: Sweet natured, curious, talkative, friendly, easy to catch
Cons: escape artist, easy to catch
Small size allows these tiny birds to squeeze out of the smallest hole. Not very fast, so easy to catch. Our Sugar is super sweet, my son's favorite bird of the entire flock. Lays one egg about every other day. Would love to add a bunch more to her little flock. Integrates well into other flocks. Small but stout-hearted and hardy, not afraid of other big birds. Somewhat independent. Great pet bird for a gentle child. Fantastic color!

Cons: Flighty, and goes broody often.
My d'Anver is a little fire ball, she's also very good at figuring things out, especially if it involves food!
She's very friendly and very fun to watch! And great with little children!

Pros: Friendly, cute, protective of flock, brave, easily trained
Cons: Really broody
I only have one Belgian d' Anver, but what I have gotten out of her has been great. She is the sweetest little chicken you could ask for. She's shown many signs of bravery, including fighting a red tailed hawk MANY times her size. She was also one of my first chickens to respond to training as a chick. Her cute litle beard and full upright tail make her adorable. She is also very great around children and adults. Only problems I have had are here sitting in the nesting box for months and having to pull her out of it in 105 degree heat. Overall a great bantam that I would recommend to anyone interested in showing or having pet chickens.

Pros: Adorable, friendly, hardy and packed with personality. Make great broodies. Also, the mean roosters taste good.
Cons: Some hens are stubborn broodies. Some males are nasty.
I love these little jewels. I think my short pros and cons lists sum them up quite nicely. In fact, much of my life has revolved around my flock since I acquired them in 1998.

Pros: alerts flock quickly, keeps order, sweet nature, beautiful colors
Cons: full, loud crow
Our Belgian d'Anver rooster is fabulous! He's wonderful with the flock - very protective. He isn't aggressive, but does have a dominant demeanor. He rounds everyone up to roost in the evening. -always sounds the alarm to potential danger when the flock is roaming around and foraging. -is very friendly towards family members, and loves to perch on an arm or in the lap. He is hand fed treats, but usually drops them for his hens to enjoy first. -super, sweet chicken!! -a favorite!

We have had a quail Belgian d' Anvers for two years now and she is fantastic! She is my five year olds best friend and follows her around the garden and into the house! Never been broody and lays about four small but perfect eggs a week. When in the garden she talks to you, and loves human company. I have a mixed flock and she really holds her own. Loves cuddles!!!

These chickens are beautiful, tame as anything, lay gorgeous tasting tiny little eggs (perfect hard boiled and put in a salad!). I've had about ten or more al together, and they have remained my favourite since I brought my first one home at the age of about 9. They are perfect for children- reasonably low maintenance, funny little 'chickenalities', and just pet sized, so nice and easy to handle. The maddest and wildest of them are easily tamed through food and cuddles, and both hens and cockerels love to be handled! I have one currently that actually runs into my hands when I call her.
If your looking to breed chickens though I haven't had much luck from belgians as far as chicks are concerned - I think it's something to do with how tame they are, they seem to lose the urge to go broody. When they do though they make great mothers - very protective.
The only problem they have is cold - they don't do well with it, so keep them warm through winter!
