The Oath of Cirion and Eorl represented the eternal bond of friendship between the realms of Rohan and Gondor.[1]
History[]
Cirion took Eorl the Young, the Lord of the Éothéod, to the hallowed site of Amon Anwar, and there before the Tomb of Elendil they swore an Oath, giving Calenardhon to the Éothéod, and promising eternal friendship between the two Kingdoms. Cirion called upon Eru Ilúvatar to witness the oath, an act that amazed the witnesses as usually only the Kings of Gondor had that right, so hallowing the place where it was spoken. It is said that no greater oath has been said by men since Elendil swore an oath of allegiance and everlasting friendship to Gil-galad upon Amon Sûl.[2]
When Aragorn II ascended the throne of Gondor, he and Éomer of Rohan swore the oath anew, as the original oath had been sworn by Cirion with the traditional formula, 'until the King returns'.
