The Tomb of Elendil was the burial place of Elendil, marking the center of the kingdom of Gondor prior to the ceding of Calenardhon to the Éothéod.

Description[]

The tomb was located at the eastern end of the summit of Halifirien, consisting of a grassy mound on which grew the flower alfirin. Before it lay a black stone inscribed with the Quenya phrase, lambe, amdo, lambe. Though the mountain was covered with forest, the summit was treeless, and a stone stair made by Isildur led from the edge of the wood to the tomb.[1]

History[]

At some point between the years SA 3441 and TA 2, Isildur visited Halifirien and created the tomb for his father, who had perished in combat with Sauron in the Siege of Barad-dûr. Upon its completion, Isildur had Elendil's casket placed into the tomb and then hallowed the place. Ever afterwards, the mountain was known for its silence, and it was renamed Amon Anwar, "Hill of Awe".[2]

Before his final departure, Isildur decreed that each King of Gondor should journey to the tomb in times of war or distress to find quiet, but that the place should be known only to the king and his heir when he came of age. This was known as the "Tradition of Isildur", and kept by his descendants until the line of kings ended, and the Stewards of Gondor ruled the kingdom.[2]

Following the Battle of the Field of Celebrant in TA 2510, Cirion, twelfth Steward of Gondor, summoned Eorl the Young to Amon Anwar, where he offered ownership of the land of Calenardhon to Eorl for his part in defending Gondor. Eorl accepted, and the two took part in what became known as the Oath of Cirion and Eorl, each pledging friendship and loyalty to the other. Afterwards Cirion had Elendil's casket removed from the tomb and taken to the Houses of the Dead in Minas Tirith, as the tomb was no longer was located in the center of Gondor.[1]

The Tomb of Elendil in The Lord of the Rings Online

In The Lord of the Rings Online, the Tomb of Elendil stands untouched, although several Variags have tried to find their way in. A ceremonial Tomb of Elendil had also been build in Annuminas, though the King's remains never rested there.
