　観念の歴史（history of ideas）と精神史（intellectual history）のたどってきた道をふりかえる論考を読む。著者は精神史の第一人者にして、『観念の歴史』誌の編集にたずさわるアンソニー・グラフトンである。全体は三部に分かれ、当初の繁栄、衰退、そして近年の再興（ただしかつてとは違ったかたちでの）を記述する。ちなみにこの論考内で観念史と精神史は定義されていない。またこれら二つもあまり区別されずに使われているようだ。

　20世紀前半の観念史と精神史を語るうえでグラフトンが強調するのは、それが多様なバックグラウンドをもつ研究者たちの交流の場所として機能していたということだ。観念の歴史学派の創始者であるラブジョイは、しばしば文学、思想、芸術を彼のいう「ユニット・アイディアズ」に還元したとされる。だがじつのところラブジョイは諸観念がある文化的場のうちで表現されることを重視し、たとえば知の制度的基盤に強い関心をしめしていた。多様な観念が多様なコンテキストとの関係で表現されるがゆえに、観念の歴史は必然的に多様なディシプリンの研究者の共同作業を必要とする。こうして生まれた学際的な共同作業としての観念史は、ディシプリンをまたいで研究者相互が対話する環境が整備されていなかった当時において一種の仮想的サロンを提供することになる。

　観念史は教育環境によっても下支えされていた。第一次世界大戦後にコロンビア大学やシカゴ大学は「西洋文明」コースを、多様な学生に共通の知的バッググラウンドを与えるために創設する。そこではたとえば「グレート・ブックス」を2年間かけて読むことが行われた。これにより多くの学生が精神史を重要であり、また近しい分野として感じるようになった。この他にも人類の進歩の歴史を書くというプログラムとの親和性、そこからくる科学史との密接な結びづき（近代以前・以後の世界観を明らかにしよう）、ドイツからの亡命知識人たちからの手法のとりこみがあいまって、精神史は隆盛をきわめることになる。

　しかし70年代にはいると、精神史・観念史は衰退をはじめる。文学研究、美術研究、そして哲学の領域で歴史の軽視が高まった。観念史を支えていた科学史は専門雑誌内で動くようになるだけでなく、研究対象が現代よりにシフトさせることで一般の歴史家にはその内容が理解しづらくなった。また精神史の対象であった（著作を残すような）著名な人物ではなく、従来歴史記述のうちにふくまれていなかった人物に光をあてる必要が唱えられた。観念史ではなく社会史というわけだ。進歩の観念がゆらぎ、また西洋やアメリカの思想といったものの一体性がもはや想定できなくなったことも観念史から求心力を奪った。観念史は歴史学のうちでマージナルな領域となる。

　この動きが進んでいた70年代後半から80年代初頭にかけてこそしかし、新しい変化が起きていた。これが精神史の再度の隆盛をもたらすことになる。歴史家たちは学問分野の歴史を従来よりもインターナルな視点から描こうとしはじめた。これによりかつての観念を厳密に歴史的な方法でとらえることを歴史家が試みはじめる。哲学の領域でもかつての思想の歴史的分析が注目を集める（たとえばヘレニズム哲学研究の隆盛やロイドのギリシア哲学研究）。哲学と歴史学がさいど交わることにより、ポストモダニズムと呼ばれた解釈をめぐる理論的考察が歴史学に衝撃を与える。フーコーの著作は新たなテキストの読みを誘発し、その初期の著作の刺激からはジャン・ゴールドシュタイン、スチュアート・クラークの研究が生まれ、後期の著作からはピーター・ブラウン、キャロライン・バイナム、トマス・ラカーらの成果があらわれた。いわゆる「物質的転回 material turn」も観念史を再活性化する。人びとが住む建築空間と思想との関係や、博物館の出現が世界認識に与えた効果が探求された。精神史の内部でも物質的転回は起こる。ロジェ・シャルチエやカルロ・ギンズブルグは書物と読者をめぐる新たな歴史記述を生みだした。ここからたとえば書物がいかに読まれたかを検証するための余白研究が進む。これにより文学研究のような領域からの精神史への参入が活発化した。さらに中国史とユダヤ史の分野が有力な分析モデルを提供するようになり、精神史の範囲はグローバルなものとなってきている。

　以上みてきたように精神史は、その内実をテクニカルにしながら、同時にその物質的側面をも探求する分野として再興し、その範囲をグローバルなものとしつつある。この再興した精神史の受け皿となるのが『観念の歴史』誌の役割であるという。
